I have this book along with the tape. Ronald Pellegrino also has a YouTube channel where he has quite a lot of stuff up including some music he did based on the patches in the book.

Very sad news.
It seems he suffered enough though..

I am sure you will really enjoy building a replica. I had a Moog IIc years ago and loved it but the realisation that I wanted a bigger system but couldn't afford it led me to look elsewhere. I got lucky and found a large Polyfusion so I didn;t have the same problem as you do.

I think it will be a LOT of work. I would probably try someone like COTK and order a system from them..
If you want a perfect replica then I guess you will have to build zourself a system but it would be a lot of work.

What people ask and what they get are pretty varied these days.
VCS3 are so iconic I can see people wanting them for a few reasons. They are small. They are early (69 or so I think they started), they are iconic (the list of users is pretty cool especially if you are into the German scene of the 70 ...
