and some more midi problems...

Post by roodbwoy » Fri Apr 29, 2011 3:05 pm

gaaaah when does it end! more midi problems, I bought (advice by Amos) din midi cables, tried working with those, midi SEAMED more responsive but 8 out of the 10 times the midi notes hanged which was only solved by a powercycle, switched back to USB, unresponsive midi, also hanging notes (I installed the latest patch v3.1 but did not helped), seriously, is this only me? is this only Ableton? or Windows? I mean, yeah the Slim Phatty is AWESOME but to be honest it's totally useless to me at the moment because I can't program it correctly :-(

any idea's?

I have been very busy the past few days.

I've improved the Slim Phatty firmware a lot, and I've done a lot of testing as well, both in Live and in other programs.

I am really starting to think there's something wrong with Live's MIDI output. Here's a test I just did:

Image

The top row shows a recording of MIDI output from the Slim filter knob, run into Live 8.2.2 and out of Live into Cubase (via MidiYoke).

The bottom row is the same Slim filter knob recorded directly into Cubase.

When I use the Slim in Live, MIDI I send to the Slim is always chunky and glitchy...
When I use the Slim in Cubase, everything is smooth and glitch-free.
Live shows that it's recording MIDI IN pretty smoothly... but the output sounds just like the top recording-image looks... rough!

I will post a firmware update in this thread; I'd like you to try it. It has Legato Glide, LFO reset on keypress, and should handle MIDI a lot more smoothly than your current firmware. Let me know how it works for you.

You might also want to try producing in Reaper (it's a free DAW for windows) and see if you have the same problems you're having in Live or not... just to keep the Phatty in the game and rule out the DAW... it would be a good test.

Cheers,

Amos

Hi Amos!

Thanks for the time taken to compare the two! Of course I help test the new firmware, also gonna try Reaper, good idea.

I have to say that I downloaded the Max4Live trial and used a M4L patch to use the phatty discussed on this forum, so far it works a lot better then the default envelope editors, thinking about buying M4L and develop the patch further so every parameter is automate-able!

Cheers!

Sweet! Here's the newest firmware (be sure to get the version for Slim, not for Little Phatty):

Hello, I am also experiencing significant problems with the slim phatty. I'm triggering it via the midi out of a MicroKorg XL directly into the midi in on the SP. I tried all the updates that have been offered, currently running OS 3.03 and also added the recent usb update that I thought would address the problem (I did the usb update early tuesday moring, May 2nd - but it still malfunctioned on my show last night). I experience hanging notes and occasionally a random lack of triggering when a note is pressed. In the case of hanging notes, the gate will randomly open, leaving every note following to be legato, it will only close if you the play the same note (same octave) that orginally caused the gate stay open. Please let me know what can be done, thanks.

John

P.S. while I'm mentioning things, the SP does take a very long time to reach 440 - an hour or longer. Is there anything that can be done to aid this. The Midi problem is my first priority though.

I have tested two microKorgs (original, not XL) with the Little & Slim Phatty and I got tons of stuck notes. It seemed to be a problem with the Korg actually failing to generate note off (or on) messages from its keyboard, as best I could tell.

Did a search for Microkorg +"stuck note" and found this, maybe it will help:
http://forums.m-audio.com/showthread.ph ... Midi/page8
I was running into this "stuck note" problem all the time. I literally could not play the keyboard for more than 7-10 seconds without suffering from this issue. I made a change and I have not experienced the problem since the change (and this is with playing the keyboard for a few minutes without issues).

I'm not sure if this is universal or specific to microKorg, but the issue appears to be in the keyboard serving as midi controller using its own internal clock for syncing of data. By default, the Korg is set to internal. I set it to external (I'm guessing which means it receives its clocking info from the DAW and not itself) and the issue appears to be gone.
I'm not totally sure if this fixed it, but I've been playing for minutes now without having it happen since. At the very least if it's still there it's much more manageable now (though I have yet to experience it happening since making this change!).

For those of you who have a microKorg, do this to make this setting change: turn your edit select knob 2 all the way right to MIDI. Then turn knob 1 (cutoff) from 'on' to 'off' (I made this change too but it didn't solve the problem, though it did noticeably reduce it).
Next, turn knob 2 (resonance) from 'int' to 'ext'.

Once I made this change the problem disappeared!

On a related note I noticed that the MicroKorg I was testing was constantly sending out MIDI clocks all the time, no matter what. I bet if this was turned off there might be fewer stuck note problems.

In addition, I have even newer firmware for the Slim Phatty which definitely improves MIDI IN performance. Please try it and let me know if it helps you!
If you've already done firmware updates, you know the drill. In PhattyLoader, just go to "File...Open" and select this file to send:

Cheers!

(PS) I hope you no longer need it, but you can also leave the Master Menu of the Slim on the MIDI SETUP - All Notes Off page; on this page, pressing Enter will clear any stuck notes and reset the note stack.
