Voyager RME - which expanders/controllers?

Post by screamingstrings76 » Fri Mar 18, 2011 4:36 pm

Ok, so I have a Voyager RME and a CP251. I can either get both VX expanders, or one of the VX expanders and a MP201....

Which would be the most useful combination?

I would think the most useful combination right now would be the MP201 and the VX352, as i have the CP251, and i do plan on getting the vx351 soon as well. The only other modular/cv piece of gear i have is the MF101, and a cv-modded Korg Monotron filter :D

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think having both vx modules would benefit you. Isn't one meant for rme and the other for the keyboard? On that note doesn't the one for rme have xy outputs, how does that work with no touch pad?
My modular so far: Q104, Q106 x2, Q107, Q108, Q109 x2 , Q116, Q118, Q127 w/Q140, Q130, STG Wave Folder, Mixer and Mankato playing with Moog Voyager, VX-351, CP-251, MF-104M x2 ( STEREO!) Volca Beats and Bass, Arturia Beat step

Actually, there is benefit. VX-352 gives a host of inputs as the standard (non-rack mount) Voyager has on the back panel. VX-351 on the other hand is the opposite, outputs for a number of connections including LFO, envelopes, etc. What good is it without touchpad and kbd and LHC? Not quite as good as on an Old School (which also does not have touchpad), but the LFO out, S+H out, Envelope outs, 2 mults, 2 attenuators, etc.

Am not sure if Midi sent into the RME results in Pitch and Gate being sent out the VX-351 but if so, that is a handy use for driving a FreqBox, and SEM or other 1V per octave OSCs/Synths. Also don't know if the Voyager's LFO can be sync'd to Midi but if so, that feature of the 351 is also great, use it to pulse steps on a MurF 105/B etc.

With the exception of the ENV outs, just about all of that can be had via a CP-251, which one could argue is money better spent but if you have a bunch of other gear, having a self running LFO, and Envelope that can be applied to other Foogers, etc. is of some value. As always, it comes down to how much money, space and time do you have?

Ohhhh I took a closer look at the 352, I didn't realize that it was mostly inputs. I always looked at that and questioned why it had xy outputs...but they are inputs. Is it possible to have both connected?(the 351 & 352)

yeah, if you look on the back of the RME, there are two DB25 (old fashioned PC Serial ports; one male one female). I only know this because I was going to buy one some time ago but opted for the Old School instead. RME is great though...
