Voyager, VX-351 and dot.com

Post by Moogsound » Tue Jan 20, 2009 7:04 am

Hi!

New member here.

My system is a Voyager(performer)1 Expander 351 and a 22 space dot.com:
Q104 MIDI Interface
Q105 Slew Limiter
Q106 3.Oscillator (VCO) w/CRS
Q108 2.Amplifier (VCA)
Q109 2.Envelope Generator
Q110 Noise Source
Q113 Mixer 8-Channel
Q116 Ring Modulator
Q117 Sample and Hold
Q118 Instrument Interface
Q124 Multiples
Q125 Signal Processor
Q130 Clipper, Rectifier
Q141 Oscillator Aid
Q150 Ladder Filter (VCF)

I would like to have some suggestion how to get the best out of my system by the use of the vx351. I have experimented a lot, but I find the expander sometime difficult to understand complete.
Any suggestions is welcome.

Kjell

Welcome to the forum!

Well the Expander contains all of the CV outs, of corse.

If you are using the Voyager as a controller then you can use the pitch to the Oscs, the envelope outputs to the appropriate places. THe Vx will allow certian setings on the Voyager to be externalized, like the keyboard voltages, filter and vol envelopes, LFO outs and things like that. Don't forget that the Voyager has all of those Juicy inputs as well.

WHat exactly is giving you the problem and what are you trying to accomplish? Unless it is the XYA outputs for the touchpad? THen the Attenuators and the multiples just like on the DOtcom.

I think your dotcom system could function wonderfully on its own too.

Thanks for your feedback. I will try out your suggestions.
I,m agree the dotcom stays good on its own. I even have the beautiful dotcom midicontroller and a keyboardgarage for the cabinet. Pics will come. I,m not shure what I want-perhaps just learn a little bit more what can be done and not be done with this system.

Welcome to the forum.
Music can Name the Unnamable and Communicate the Unknowable.

'I am... everything is... changed... they're calling... your face... interwoven... who is...' Patient mumbles inaudibly to a tune (sounds like 'Thanks for the memory).

May I ask where you are from?

FIrst of all, you have some steep learning curves to tackle with just the Voyager. THen the dotcom system will provide many years of discovery.

Those two units combined have got to be absolutely fabulous!

Just don't forget about MIDI. One will control the other. THats an increadible system that you have there so hopefully you will find this forum and the synthesizers.com yahoo users group a home as you continue to develop your technique.

Thank you Eric.

Yes I think those synthesizers is a powerful duo. When I,m more familiar with the expander, the possibilitis are almost endless.
Even then its always a hunger to buy more modules...
I,m from Norway. If you like you can watch me on youtube with the dotcom and the Voyager:

Very nice indeed! Hang on...is there a way to get polyphony out of that rig? Someway to connect the Voyager to the modular for polyphony? That would be pretty cool. Impossible, without two keyboards, but cool!
Minitaur, CP-251, EHX #1 Echo, EHX Space Drums/Crash Pads, QSC GX-3, Pyramid stereo power amp, Miracle Pianos, Walking Stick ribbon controller, Synthutron.com, 1983 Hammond organ, dot com modular.

Thanks.

Its possible to play duophonic with the dotcomcontroller-not exactly polyphony, but its a nice option to have.

If a modular has a VCA per Osc (or a multi input vca or a big mixer going to the vca) then it will play as many provided that you are able to send many different pitch voltages. Just like making a polymoog out of a bunch of 921s or having a manual per voice.

You could control the dotcom with the voyager, setting the voyager for being the second note in the chain just like you would if you had 2 voyagers. THe dotcom woudl be the first voice.

Their controller is capable of duophony but its a split keyboard.

Thanks for that, EricK! I will have a polyphonic modular even if it kills me! I may need the 44-space system after all. Of course, I can always start out with an Astroturf-covered entry level system.

You will need a keyboard that will send either midi or you will definately need to send an independant voltage to an oscillator for every voice you want.

I don't think youll need a VCA for every osc.
