Moog Minitaur without a PC?

Post by RichardRowe » Fri May 16, 2025 2:43 am

Is it possible to get everything out of the Minitaur without using the software editor? I'm talking about accessing all the functions, saving/loading presets, etc.
I understand the functions can be a little confusing on such a small device, but I don't mind printing out instructions and getting used to them through repeated use.
I love the Circuit, I love sound design... but connecting to a PC to edit presets just really kills the workflow for me. I'm hoping the same doesn't happen with the Minitaur.

The bad news: the Minitaur editor has not been updated for a few years and may not work on new versions of Windows and OSX. I know that OSX High Sierra works, I keep my MacBook Pro running for that reason.

The good news: most functions can be adjusted from the Minitaur panel holding the GLIDE button as a "shift", combined with other knobs. Download the latest firmware v2.2.1 and view the change log for details on "shift" functions. Presets can be loaded and edits can be saved using a similar technique.

While the editor may not work on new OS versions, the editor manual is a good reference.

The Minitaur user manual includes a table listing the MSB CC controls for all controls including those "under the hood".

The editor is still doing fine in Win10. I Have "some Issues" with the Preset Manager under Mac OS Sequoia but i can still edit.

I recently purchased a Minitaur and had similar questions about being able to use it without an editor. I’m always a little apprehensive about relying on software as there will be a time when a company stops updating it…

One thing I still haven’t worked out is whether it’s possible to run note calibration without the editor.

Not an issue right now while the editor is still being supported but I’m thinking five years from now!

Anyone know if it’s possible to run note calibration without the editor?

Out of the box, the Moog Minitaur is a fully analog monophonic synthesizer with a digital control interface. All core sound-shaping controls—oscillators, filter, envelope, modulation—are accessible via the front panel.

You can create and tweak sounds entirely using the physical knobs.

The layout is compact but intuitive once you learn the labels and shift functions.

MIDI input/output works without needing software, making it perfect for DAW-less setups or hardware-based live rigs.

The editor still works fine for me on Windows 10 too. I’ve had some issues with the Preset Manager on macOS Sequoia, but nothing that stops me from editing. Still usable. I even added a few stickers for hidden functions I tend to forget during live use — makes it quicker in the heat of the moment.

Good to know it’s still working fine on Windows 10! Thanks for sharing the link — really helpful.
Interesting note about macOS Sequoia and the Preset Manager — hope they patch that soon.
Also, nice idea with the stickers for hidden functions! Might borrow that trick for live sets.
