she happened to have a very silly name, would you treat her badly just
because of that?
That's a superduper metaphor... except for the fact that I didn't make the girl, and didn't have the opportunity to name her something suitable, or at least cool. If we're going to take this metaphor... then it is Moog who named their beautiful daughter "Big Fatass," (despite having the chance to name her anything) and hope we accept her for her more pleasant qualities. ; )
Anyway, the name is anti-hip... named by a clever and ironic individual
I'm all for cleverness and irony... but... um... companies spend a great deal of money trying to market their work... why would it be clever or ironic or most importantly FINANCIALLY VIABLE to name a product something you know most people are going to be displeased with?
an attempt to convey old-skool flavor, with a bit of postmodern
self-referential self-deprecation.
It's not :::ahem::: old-skool. Those words are still very much in use...
Why would a VERY high quality synthesizer... the most prized brand ever... need to be self-deprecating? You don't see... I don't know... Lexus... calling their next car "Piece of Sh*t," or Korg releasing a keyboard called "Doesn't work very well, but is shiny."
Think about it: Moog is a
company entering the 21st century with an analog, voltage controlled
monosynth... how "not with-it" is that?
:::blink gormlessly for a moment::: What? Is he serious? I can't think of anything MORE "with-it..." which is why they can charge high prices... and why their product is purchased by amateurs and professionals alike. There's a REASON you see Voyagers on stage with all of the biggest stars. How could anyone think Moog isn't with-it? People buy Moogs simply because of the NAME!
When all is said and done, and you have seen and heard the beauty of this
synth, then go ahead if you like and say that you will boycott Moog forever
because of a silly name.
Um... don't you think that's a little hyperbolic? Like perhaps a little defensively hyperbolic? No one is going to stop using Moogs because of a poor naming choice, and everyone should know that.
I say, don't take yourself too seriously and all
will be well. So the name doesn't awe you with its grandeur. When you're
playing it it won't even matter...'
I say the most historically important, revered, and quality synth company might do well to take itself a little MORE seriously.
And how I feel about the name while I'm playing it will depend very much on whether its name is emblazoned on the back for my audience to see. ; )
We think it's funny on several levels...
Well, I hope what levels those are will be portrayed in the manual for the rest of us to appreciate them. ; )
I hope it grows on you.'
Did he really close it with a penis pun???
Woww.
