Home Made Vocoders.

[Robot Voice]
I was eyeing up a project home made vocoder on ebay but the price got a bit strong for me:

But I do quite fancy the idea of making a vocoder.

I built a Paia vocoder a while back. It's a nice simple project and the results are ok but I fancy something a bit more sophisticated that may generate a richer sweeter sound.
Is the quality of the sound on these things mostly down to the number of bands or is there a bit more to it than that?

Ferreting about the internet I found documentation of a few machines which I'll list below but I was wondering if anyone had any advice or experience with these machines or had any other designs to recommend?

If anyone knows of any other vocoder plans please share them, whether you've tried 'em or not.

Thanks.

Interesting to hear about building a vocoder...I tried the Orange and Native software vocoders but not having any hardware to compare with I'm undecided..I know I wasnt too impressed..nothing like the effects Ive seen demonstrated with various hardware vocoders..I too wondering about building..
could you let me know what you decide on?
