CV output mod as MIDI to CV

Post by HowardJones » Thu Jun 17, 2010 7:13 pm

Hi, I've only just registered and have tried to search for an answer to this question, sorry if it's already been covered.

I'm considering getting an LP Stage II to add to my existing modular setup.

Can the CV output modification be used as a MIDI to CV converter ? In other words if I were to connect my MIDI sequencer to the LP, will it output CV based on MIDI input - or will it only output CV based on what is actually played on its keyboard, mod wheel etc. I guess the same goes for USB input - will MIDI transmitted over USB to the LP be output as CV ?

cheers

I've noticed when I have my Tom Oberheim SEM hooked up to the MIDI OUT of the LP, and then play the piano roll out in Cubase (going into LP MIDI IN), it only plays on the LP, not the SEM.

So if MIDI IN doesn't feed through to the MIDI OUT, presumably, it won't convert either. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here, I don't have the CV Mod on my LP.

Chalk up another item to the Stage III wishlist!!! MIDI IN should translate to the MIDI OUT!

I may be miles off here so apologies. But don't you need to have Midi Through in order to pass on the midi signal to a second unit (in your case the SEM). Just an idea and no I'm no expert on midi.

You may be right, the THRU on my Tetra works great. :D

REVISION: ADD MIDI THRU FOR STAGE III! :p

I do wonder about the possibility of MIDI OUT doing this though, as MIDI THRU plugged in to another synth wouldn't allow you to play the LP keyboard and have the other synth play.

Hi guys,

I think nobody has answered the original poster's question. He's not asking about MIDI Thru at all.
The question is whether you can send MIDI into an LP with CV-out mod, and get pitch and gate control voltages out of the LP in response (MIDI to CV conversion). The answer is Yes.

As for the subsequent post about not getting any MIDI Thru from the LP, you need to go to the Master menu, MIDI Setup, and turn on MIDI Merge. This will take any MIDI messages received at the LP MIDI IN, and pass those same messages to the MIDI OUT, merged with any MIDI the LP generates internally. MIDI notes and CC messages are merged in this way; MIDI Clock and other realtime messages are not merged.

Hope this helps,

Amos
