Controlling CV outputs via Midi input?
Controlling CV outputs via Midi input?
Hi
I'm thinking about buying the MP-201, but I'm not sure that this pedal can receive midi in and send these information to my analogue modules via the four CV outputs?
So I can use the MP-201 as a midi to CV converter, can anyone help?
Thanks.
Best wishes
Simon

Yep, it works very well. For instance, as a MIDI to CV converter, I'm using it to control my 'foogers with a MIDI keyboard as a monosynth, and sending MIDI envelopes drawn in Ableton Live to the 'foogers for custom modulation.

The process is a bit time consuming compared to just using LFO's and the like, but my workflow is picking up a bit and its great to have MIDI tracks for my modulation all lined up with the rest of my audio and MIDI tracks, so I can play my bass through the osc's and whatnot while moving through the beat and stuff with a foot controller and having the accompanying filter modulation (for instance) automated with the rest of the stuff going on in Ableton; this will be great for live performance, and also for creating more complex modulations with my hardware than the MP201 alone can at the moment. Sticking to hard-edged waveforms/envelopes and using the CP251's lag processor to smooth things out is definitely the easiest way to get going, as its a bit difficult to actually draw precise envelopes with my laptop mousepad... anyway, to get going:Suburban Bather wrote:Envelopes drawn in LiveDontBelievetheHype wrote:Yep, it works very well. In clip view, open a blank MIDI clip, set length to taste and click the 'E' in the bottom left corner to bring up the Envelope view; 'Pitch bend' should already be selected, so you then just start drawing or point&clicking the desired envelope/lfo shapes.
Have a MIDI cable from your interface to the MP201's MIDI In and set the mode to MIDI-CV, and route Ableton's MIDI clip to the MP201; in myAbleton, the MP201 doesn't register, so it says its sending it to my PadKontrol (which obviously isn't connected at the moment), but it sends to the MP201 all the same.
In the MP201's menu, set the 'pitch bend' and 'CV scale' to taste; For most 0/+5v gear you'll probably want to start with these settings maxed for adequate range, and then taper down from there is necessary (ie pitch bend set to 24 semitones.)

More on the topic of Ableton and the MP201;
I've tried to use a few of Abletons MIDI effects, ie the arpeggiator, but was unable to get any response from the mp201/hardware. I haven't spent too much time with that aspect, so I'm not sure if it is just not possible, or if I was not doing it correctly.
Speaking of which, does anyone know of any good software sequencers that would work with the MP201? Maybe something with nice envelope and LFO functions that could be routed to the MP201, and maybe rewired into Ableton or something (ive never used any vst's or rewiring or anything yet.., just Ableton 7 and my bit of hardware). Basically I'd like something that allows me to do what I've been doing with Ableton, but with higher functionality/ease of use, and on-the-fly manipulation is a must (thats probably a given with sequencers Id imagine..)

If you're using a Mac, your best bet is probably Numerology.
In Ableton Live, you should be able to set up a simple clip of MIDI notes and send that to the MP-201, with a couple channels set up in Midi2CV and Gate modes, and get MIDI notes to CV/Gate conversion that way. Now if you slap Live's arpeggiator plugin on that MIDI track, you should get arpeggiated Gate/CV out of the MP-201.

I am on a Mac, thanks for the suggestion I'll be checking it out.Amos wrote:If you're using a Mac, your best bet is probably Numerology.
That makes sense... I don't know what I was expecting the arpeggiator to.. arpeggiate since I didn't have any notes :p Easy as 1,2,3... thanks, this works great as well, lovin' it!Amos wrote:In Ableton Live, you should be able to set up a simple clip of MIDI notes and send that to the MP-201, with a couple channels set up in Midi2CV and Gate modes, and get MIDI notes to CV/Gate conversion that way. Do you just have one track in Live with blank MIDI clips that have envelopes, or do you have 4 that get set to each channel on the MP-201? I'm still trying to find the best way to integrate Live, into my set up, so any workflow tips are appreciated.
So far, I've only really used it for putting some guitar loops to construct the order of a song. I know how everything works, and have warped lots of audio, but I would like to integrate it more into my actual music making and recording process.

So this thing only plays one note?
