Voyager Animation/Light Paint Video

Hey Voyager Fans,

I uploaded this Moog/Rhodes animation I've been working on, and it's gotten a great response. But there is a strong demand for a more voyager-centric project. And I was wondering what features you would want to see highlighted in this kind of style.

Obviously I'm going to have to take it into some kind of intergalactic oscilloscope voyage, but beyond that, what do you guys want to see?

I offer no suggestions. I am pleasantly suprised and refreshed with this.

Great sounding stuff...I use a Voyager and Rhodes as well so I know all too well how these two beauties sing to oneanother.

I love it!

It would be pretty cool to see you use the touch pad just because it can be is a really kinetic animation in the sound if you know what i mean. If you got v 3.4 the sample and hold octaves touch pad sound is awesome.

all in all, really like what your doing. If you really want to highlight the voyager it would be really cool to do something move the knobs with the light some how....

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

I'm not looking to change it, but to expand on it. This is only the beginning of my experiments in this realm here. I just got these keys in August. So I'm just looking to pool some ideas from the community to push it even further....

And anyone who wants me to give this treatment to their gear... let's make it happen.

Well At first I didn't want to offer any suggestions because I didn't think that there was any way that I could improve upon what you have already done.

BUT since you want to do some crazy stuff...

You could put the mod wheel in different positions and animate it like its doing it by itself.

And the most favorite of the Minimoog is its flip up panel. You could have the panel going up and down really fast in tempo. That would look neat.

Pointer pots could turn themselves as could a close up of the filter cutoff.

You could show the lfo led slowing down or speeding up.

On the Rhodes, you could take the lid off and actually light up the tines or the tonebars. Im sure a lot of people would be curious to see the Rhodes Indoskeleton if they haven't already

But I already love what you did. I love the fact that the synth lines are really simple and to the point without being unnecessarily complicated. I liked hopw the illuminated keys was like an ode to the old keyboards that show you how to play or even the old player pianos.

Anyway, I loved it.

He Ethan, thanks for that. I enjoyed your other pieces as well and even shared the "Time is Tight" bit with my Bass class. We're studying Duck Dunn this week and perfect timing. Did you actually shoot the Stax footage or just pull it from somewhere and spin with snazzy effects? (looks like a movie theatre there now but the monument stands) Awesome and thx again...

To MikeW: Wow, thanks for watching the other stuff. Good choice on Duck Dunn for the perfect timing study. Any of the M.G.'s would be good for this...

I have a bunch of other Stax-themed videos on my blog. The footage from time is tight is stuff that I shot last winter when I made a pilgrimage down to McLemore Ave. in Memphis. There's a really museum now where the studio once stood. Definitely worth a visit. All that footage is mine (except for the performance of T.I.T. at the very end.

Dazz:

The main technique I used was light painting, using long exposure photography and LED flashlights to light up the keys or draw the lines. I used this in conjunction with more traditional time lapse photography (moon/stars/clouds etc.) and video footage of an old analog oscilliscope that I use in my ableton setup.

Using sends, I can isolate any of my tracks in the oscilliscope, so if I want to get the shape of the bassline, I will send just the bass out of my interface to 3-4, which sends to the oscilliscope. I then used that footage to represent each part of the track separately, and also to make video filters (see the outro section where the oscilliscope kind of forms a window to the rhodes video).

Theres a few other little tricks I employed, but it just comes from tooling around with this kind of stuff for a while.
