Dunlop Trem/Vol as an expression pedal

Post by Zed » Tue Jul 17, 2007 7:46 am

I can't afford to try an EP2 right now, and I've been considering replacing the pot in my EP1 with something that's better sealed, but I'd like to try using my volume pedal.
How do I connect the Dunlop with my MF101?

Anybody?

A bud of mine and I sat down last p.m./this a.m. with a stereo cable bared at one end, two mono plugs w/ one bared end each, and tried each and every possibility we could think of as far as what wire was connected to what wire(or disconnected entirely), what was plugged in where, where the "heel down" and "toe down" settings were on the Dunlop, etc.
We abandoned logic pretty early in the process and just started doing our level best to attempt every possibility.
No luck.

Hi

For a start, I think pots in volume pedals are of the log scale variety. For an expression pedal, you probably want a linear pot so the response is even throughout the sweep of the pedal.

Stereo volume pedals have a "double-ganged" pot in them to keep each channel separate. So, plugging mono jacks into the outputs and connecting them to a stereo jack won't work.

Depending on how the expression pedal is wired, you might be able to plug a stereo cable from an output to a CV input. Or you could attach a stereo cable directly to the pot itself. A diagram for this is in the back of most Moogerfooger manuals. But the response will probably still be log.

You could try replacing the pot in the volume pedal, if you really wanted to use the enclosure. Or wait until you've got forty bucks and grab an EP-2...

Thanks, L'on. I've been going through old threads here, putting together sheets of potentially useful info, and the fact that your screenname is on so many of the posts has not gone unnoticed.
I went to Radio Shack last night with the original pot/wire assembly in my hand. No luck. The only pots they had didn't appear to be any better sealed than the original, and I would have to cut off part of the metal shaft and (here's the tricky bit) drill a hole in the side for the cotter (sp?) pin.
I guess what I'm going to do now is clean the pot the best I can, cover up the cleaning access hole with a piece of tape, put it all back together, and say a little prayer.
It's sad, really; unwrapping that EP1 brought literally decades of buying and recommending Moog products to a screeching halt.

9/10 times, just a spray with electrical lube will fix a pot; many a device of mine has been saved this way.

The one on the left is imperial, the other two are metric. If you want to replace the pot in your EP-1, get the correct type.

I guess that's why there's an EP-2. How old is your EP-1, BTW?

Let's see...uh...

I ordered the EP1 when I ordered my MF101...either '98 or '99. So, if the EP1 wasn't such garbage, I would've purchased a Moogerfooger ring mod' and the MuRF (I already had two Moog-designed phaseshifters that I love and use...well, probably far too often to be in good taste).
I see someone here is having serious problems with a MuRF, though, and not getting any help. Kinda makes me glad I didn't run right out and buy one...
I've noticed that some folks are posting internet-accesssible examples of their use of Moog equipment. One can hear such offerings from me here, here, and one song each here and here.
