Designing the Uberfooger...lots of questions...

Post by shakti » Fri Jun 08, 2007 10:12 pm

Hi (sory for the long post)

Inspired by the foogerstation pic on here a while back, i have decided to put together all my MFs to create a minimoogermodular; which is probably gonna be called the Uberfooger! /Oberfooger

It will consist of MFs 101, 102, 103, 104z, 105B, 107, 2 CP251s, and a custom wired patchbay for routing.

These are all enclosed in a wooden minimoog type box. The 6 pedals will be where the keys normally are and the two CP251s and the patchbay are attached to rack rails that are attached to a hinge (a la minimoog) to flip it up or lay it down flat for tweaking. This will be a box to set on the table and tweak, OR to put on the floor to use as a conventional pedalboard for bass and guitar. I doubt it will spend much time dowm there, tho.

I wanna do a proggy mockup, but I suck. So here's some old pics from my notebook:

The thing on top with the lites was going to be a furman power supply, but thats not gonna work, no room, so its out.

So I have a huge list of things to consider and design and i am almost ready to actually make it.

Here are the biggest 3 items for me now:

Patchbay- I will custom wire a 50pt PB so that it uses TS and TRS for CV/pedal ins/outs.

Hinge: the hinge and rails are a little complicated to explain so I will try to do some better pictures. But basically, the 2 cps and the patchbay will rackmount to rails that are attatched to a square frame that is attached to a heavyduty piano hinge on the bottom of the frame. The hinge is attached to a solid piece of wood that covers the rear pedal ins and outs. This piece also has a large and deep grooved scallop on top in which to store patch cords.

Power-I would like to have the power in the box (ei a pedal power unit mounted in the back of the box (I have room), but I want it to be discreet and isolated power. Furman would be cool, but it is too deep. I don't want it to make the pedals noisy(ier;-) )The Patchbay is 3-5 inches deep and that is the deepest that the rackhinge can accomodate.

Anyway, I guess i just wanted ti run this by Y'all to see if you had any ideas or corrections or criticisms.

Here is a basic list of its features:

-33"x16" hardwood box (a light, forest friendly hardwood)
-6MFs 2 CP251s a patchbay
-Rack hinge so that the PB and CPs can be placed in different positions. I
have an actual minimoog brace that I may use.
-All pedals ins and Outs are dircetly and permanantly wired to the PB.
-All wooden side pieces will be taken off the MFS
-Cord cable bar behind PB so cables aren't tugged when moving top
-all ins and outs on the PB are labeled and color coded

There is so much more, but I just wanted to get this out. Its driving me crazy.

OK Thanks all!

looks cool! I have a similar idea but more in a pedalboard type of deal so that i can gig with it. I was thinkin of hainvg three moogerfoogers on the bottom row and three on the top and then some space for exp pedals....havent thought about where a 251 would go...I actually need to get one of those.

What happens when the *next* 'fooger comes out? (space-wise, I mean.)

Nice! But let's get the spelling down - it's Überfooger!

no no no.
I figured it would contribute to more moog pronunciation confusion.

uberfooger-moooog

oberfooger- moog (mogue)

but it doesn't look as good or have the same punch.

Ok, we got the name figured out, now how bout all the other stuff :D

I just finally got my 52 point patchbay (1 point for each in and out on the foogers), gonna buy some walnut, and then go to town...
wish me luck.

How about calling it an "Obermooger"?

well, yes and no.

its been 90% imagination and 10% perspiration for me. This thing lives mostly in my notebooks for now, but I hope to finish it by december. After my thesis and the electric bass i started years ago.
heres the lowdown:
basically I am still designing and compiling parts for this project.

I just found a nice switchcraft 52 point balanced patchbay so i have all the musical/electrical parts save the power supplies. I will probably use two Voodoo labs Pedal Power PSus because they are good, small, and have a tip +or - option.

Next, I will be selecting the wood. I want it to be light but made of hardwood so I am not sure which i will be using yet.

Design-wise, right now I am trying to figure out the best material to use for the bottom of the thing: wood (ala minimoog) or sheet metal (ala bottom of tall the foogers). The pedals will be mounted on an angled frame which is then screwed onto the bottom.

after deciding all that, it will be be time to take the pedals apart and mount them on the angled frame.

Then, I will be measuring and drawing out the box for about a month.

Any tips ideas criticisms or comments are welcome!
