new moogerfooger analogue delay

Post by chris allert » Wed Mar 07, 2007 5:07 am

i've had a new mf104z for a little over 24 hours now, and i've played with it now enough to know that i'm very impressed by it. i especially like how many cv control options and audio inputs and outputs it has. one very useful feature is an effects loop in between the delay out and feedback in. the manual gives an example pach that places a ring modulator here.

the 104z allows voltage control over feedback amount, delay time, and mix amount, making it very easy to create "doppler effects" and all sorts of other strange sounds. i kind of wish it had a built-in lfo, but i guess they probably couldn't add anything more to it without making it too expensive, and it's so easy to patch an lfo in to it that i don't really miss it.

back in 2001 i decided to get a blacet time machine instead of the mf104. having both a time machine and an mf104z now is useful since the time machine has a few extra cv inputs as well as a built-in lfo, but i think the 104z outputs, especially the effects loop, will end up being a lot more useful to me. i think i'll probably end up using the 104z more than the time machine now. (especially since all my gear is 1/4" except for my five blacet modules)

the 104z manual, like all the other moogerfooger manuals is very helpful and suggests several patches that will help anyone get a better idea of what it can do. the price seems kind of steep, but it's understandable given the limited supply of the necessary delay chips. i'm not sure the "warm analogue sound" alone justifies the price to everyone, but all the patching options in addition to the sound certainly make it more than worth it to me.

i'll probably wish i had gotten a few more of these before they stop making them again, but one is probably enough really. i'd kind of like a tape echo too, but i'm waiting until someone makes one with enough cv inputs to be useful to me.
