MIDI Thru issues?

Post by kevinplaystheblues » Tue Aug 26, 2025 6:39 am

I recently rewired my rack and it became sensible to change the midi clock to my Innerclock visual metronome to come from my Muse.

De Nada. No Metronome. No Thru Thru.
  • My Muse is receiving Midi In - I am sending a play command and clock from PC and the sequencer happily starts.
    The downstream device....nothing.
Same cable plugged into any other device that has thru ports - the downstream device works fine.
Has anyone had any issues with thru? Or alternatively used it succesfully?
Does Muse have voltage on its thru port? Is it the correct voltage?

I think I recall somewhere seeing ~3.3v vs ~5v on outs being a factor on if this device would work...I wonder if that's what's happening here?

MIDI THRU normally is passive, meaning an incoming MIDI stream is just replicated, perhaps additionally buffered. I don't think that the MIDI stream is replicated by software. That would be possible, but is rather unusual. So you should see a bit stream at the output pin of the MIDI THRU socket with a scope. If not, you could try to check the MIDI THRU connector for broken contacts or bad solder points (MIDI sockets often are soldered directly to the main board, so plugging MIDI cables in and out causes mechanical stress for the solder points on the board).
