Connecting Moog Grandmother to Korg Monotron via Eurorack out

Post by Abutler » Tue Feb 08, 2022 9:33 pm

Hey guys, very new to analogue so trying to get my head wrapped around it. I have a Korg monotone which is a pain in the ass to use due to its keyboard. I have seen a really cool tutorial on youtube (listed below) and am wondering if I could connect the Grandmother to the circuitry old mate built in the video, via the Eurorack out. Is euro rack output a CV output? Or would I use the gate output? Any advice would be appreciated
Regards Alex

The gate is what's supposed to start/stop a note and is just on/off, while the CV is for the pitch and its voltage scales with pitch.

The Korg Monotron is a bit strange in that its ribbon keyboard does not have a separate pitch and gate output. When pressed, it delivers an output voltage that is connected to both gate and CV through some resistors. As a result, you can get sound out of it if you connect pitch CV out from Eurorack to the gate patch point on the Monotron circuit board. You won't get the lowest possible notes because it needs a minimum voltage to trigger.

Best would be to connect both pitch CV and gate to the patch points on the Monotron circuit board, but gate will affect pitch somewhat. You'll need to remove the resistor between the pitch and gate on the Monotron circuit board to have them really separate.

Only do these mods if you're comfortable with soldering, and understand that you can damage the monotron.
