Mother-32 with a Sub Phatty question

Post by d_imil » Thu May 14, 2020 8:52 am

Hello first time posting here, I thought I submitted this already but the post appears to not have went through (sorry if it duplicates). Been a Sub Phatty owner for a few months now and just got a great deal on a used Mother 32 to try some semi modular but also to enhance/pair with the Sub Phatty. I have a quick question that I wasn't able to find an answer for on any forum or via Google searches, was debating just contacting Moog support directly but figured this might be a good time to introduce myself here. First I'll explain what got be interested in the Mother 32 to provide some context as to question.

I saw a video showing MIDI going Sub => M32 with audio ran back into the Sub from M32 (tying the M32's gate to Sub's gate from my understand), basically making the Sub polyphonic and it kind of blew my mind. I knew Phattys could be chained together but it had never occurred to me that something like the M32 could be part of that setup instead. It sort of introduced a whole new world of possibilities into my head very quickly.

What really sold me on the M32 by itself though were some of Loopops video where he shows you how the many ways to coax multiple oscillators out of the M32, how to play paraphonically, and interesting ways to extend the sequence functionality. When I found the video from Moog a couple years ago showing how to make a single drumbeat on the M32 that actually allowed for some nice movement and variation, I was kind of mind blown.

Which finally leads me to my questions. I had spent all this time focusing on controlling and manipulating the M32 I hadn't really thought about what it could be doing in my current setup control wise. Can I use the M32 to manipulate the gate/filter/pitch/volume CV inputs on the Sub Phatty? The only thing I've used on the Sub Phatty is a Moog EP3 pedal which uses a TRS cable. I contacted Moog about this previously and they said the reason for this was so that power could be sent back to the pedal since it had no independent power source. Can I run a 3.55mm TS on the M32 to 1/4 TS on the Sub Phatty to manipulate these?

I know I can't (shouldn't) use my Keystep to do CV with the Sub Phatty because the CV range isn't aligned properly and the Keystep only allows you to set the Max CV voltage, but not the Min. I would think most Moog products though should work happily together though. It just doesn't seem that 3.55mm TS to 1/4 TS cables are very common which makes me think I'm doing something wrong, I also couldn't find colored cables at this size but was thinking I could maybe use a colored patch cable to adapter to keep track of what input is which from the Sub Phatty.

Hey. I have a Sub Phatty and Mother-32 and they pair nicely going both ways: Sub Phatty MIDI > Mother-32 --and-- Mother-32 CV > Sub Phatty. To run CV from the Mother-32 into the Sub Phatty, I use a TS Male 1/8" to TS Male 1/4" cable (like this one: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... ble-3-foot). You will find that the pitch tracking will drift after an octave or so, as the Mother-32 does not output a perfect 1 octave per volt. But things like the LFO and EG outs are great for manipulating the Sub Phatty.

I like setting them up the other way: Sub Phatty MIDI > Mother-32. I'll setup the Sub Phatty as sort of a drone machine and run a sequence on the Mother-32 (put an open ended cable in the Gate input of the Sub Phatty to keep the note open.) Then when I change notes on the Sub Phatty it also changes the key of the apreggiating sequence on the Mother-32. (You can simultaneously also utilize the CV out of the Mother-32 to effect the Sub Phatty sounds — infinite possibility!)

Hope that helps. Also, I have a Keystep and have the CV range set to +/- 5v for use with my Moog gear — works great, so I don't see an issue with using with the Sub Phatty — though using the MIDI is easier (and then simultaneously send the Keystep CV to your Mother-32 for sonic fun!)
