Moog Voyager touch surface issue ??

Post by elektrovolt » Mon Feb 27, 2017 10:02 am

After not having used my Moog Voyager for a few years I took it out of its case and while playing, I noticed that the touch surface did not work anymore. I was going to open this thing for oscillator calibration anyway, so I checked if maybe some ribbon cable had come loose. Everything looked fine so I tried disconnecting a few ribbon cables.
When I disconnect the ribbon cable at #1 or #2 the touch surface works again so the panel is not broken so it must be something else.

Could someone help me with this? An expensive repair at a Moog service centre is not really an option due to some financial issues, that is why I am selling the Voyager too..
Moog Music does not reply my emails at all, perhaps someone here could chime in.

Also I noticed that one trace on the jacks board was cut (ENV GATE). I soldered a small wire to repair the trace. I don't know if this is normal?

I wouldn't make any soldering to those boards if I were you, there is at least one deliberate cut on a trace in the analog 404 board which is likely to be specified on the schematics.

If you haven't been able to contact tech support phone them, else you might be doing harm to that unit

The only soldering I did is bridging a very rough cut trace next to the ENV gate jack, which looks like someone put a hot iron to the board. But I took it out again for testing.
I do not harm the instrument in any way.

I don't know about the schematics, the BENELUX distributor told me they cannot share ANY technical information about Moog products.
When I disconnect the ribbon cable at the left side board the touch surface works, but when touched, the overload LED is on. This indicates a voltage drop, which also shows on the +5D power. All voltages are a bit low too.

Calling Moog is a bit difficult because of the time difference..

I don't know about the cut trace on the analog board, I cannot find any schematics and the Benelus distributor cannot share ANY technical information.
Bridging the trace did not do anything at all and I removed the jumper afterwards.

With the ribbon cable detached at the left side the touch surface works but the overload LED lights up so that could indicate a voltage drop caused by too much current flow somewhere. A slight voltage drop is being measured at the +5D power rail. All voltages seem to be a little low overall.

phoning tech support is not very easy due to the time difference, but I'll try...

Well I've seen at least two 404 boards and both have that cut which means it might be deliberate and specified on the schematics, could not tell on the board you mention since I haven't noticed that yet.

You should try emailing them again if you can't reach them otherwise. Have you tried reporting the problem via the user account at the main site? If you have your product registered you should be able to do so
