Various questions —

Post by sawsinepulse » Thu Oct 08, 2015 1:21 pm

Hi — I'm coming from the CV world of Roland, modular, etc — haven't done much with MIDI (though it's not alien to me)

I like the Moog Mother 32 and had some questions I hope you can help me with

• how does one control the MM32? Is it MIDI in — that is I use a MIDI keyboard to 'play' it? Can it be controlled by CV as well (the pitch)
• the sequencer — it's synced to a gate input? Does it transpose with keyboard input (MIDI? CV?) so that you can get the same sequence in different keys as you play? I looked and saw that there's a CV input on the patch panel — so would that be one way to achieve this effect?
• is this primarily a 'bass' synth, or could be it be used a in variety of ways? (I'd read it was a bass synth, but listened to the sound demo video and it sounded very versatile)
• it's EuroRack format — but the basic model (695, or less at some dealers) comes ready to play — with a case, power supply, etc? Does the MM32 use a wall wart?
• I looked at the specs to try to answer the above questions, but they weren't so helpful — can you point me to a source that would help me answer similar future questions?

Thanks very much!

1. It has it's own little mini keyboard (using the sequencer step keys) you can play from, but you can also use a MIDI keyboard or a CV keyboard like the Keith McMillen QuNexus, which is what I'm using.
2. Yes, you can transpose using the different keys (see my video below.)
3. Nope, not just a bass synth, it has a very wide 10 Octave range, so it covers a lot! The Moog demo videos shows the wide range of sounds possible with this.
4. Yes, it comes with it's own case, power supply/wallwart.
5. The manual answers these questions, downloadable here on moogmusic.com: http://www.moogmusic.com/products/semi- ... nloads-tab

This is just a quick, getting to know you, first test of the Moog Mother-32. I came up with this patching and sequence literally 10 minutes after unboxing. This was done in one take, no multi-tracking, and every sound you hear is coming from the Mother-32 in real time, including the percussion.

With all of the patch points, along with the noise source, you can get very interesting percussion elements going at the same time as both your Saw and Pulse wave voices... not bad for a "one oscillator" synth! (a touch of reverb was added from Valhalla VintageVerb.)

Now I'm just waiting for my 3-Tier Rack to be delivered so I can add my other two Mother-32s... which means more and much better videos coming real soon!

Question looking in the other manual in the sequencer information I didn't see this in my quick browse. If you have multiple Mother-32s can the sequencers be chained sequentially? So you could have 64 steps or 96 steps played in order? Or will it always be 32 and with each additional mother you can have 32 more but played but all played simultaneously? Thanks! Obviously I do not know a thing about sequencers!

Thanks — that's very helpful. I am scanning through the manual now —

Some followup questions:

• so the sequencer is gated through 'run/stop", right?
• the sequencer can also can be run as slave to a MIDI clock in, like from a drum machine?
• I see how you can enter the sequence(s) from the internal Keyboard — but can you also do it from an external keyboard, MIDI or CV? — that is, enter the notes for the sequence from an external keyboard?
• could you point me to the page in the manual discussing the additive nature of CV's with regard to the sequencer, that is where it shows it can transpose the pitch of the sequence with keyboard input?

Thanks very much, and thanks for the video!

ooh, that's a very good question. I actually don't know, but I don't think it would be possible... but I'll try to experiment with that.

Thank you for looking into it! Yea I thought it would be cool and even if it isn't possible now Moog is good with updates it might be possible we could see it in a future update, barring any hardware limitations. Thanks again!

Well, I tried to see if there was a way to do that, but no luck. Who knows, there may be some Eurorack module that allows that kind of thing? I don't know...

But in the mean time, here are the results of two Mother-32s with their sequencers going together. This is just another simple "getting to know you" session video with the Mother-32. I wanted to try out the sync capabilities, the "live ratching" as well as introduce the Korg SQ-1 sequencer into the mix...
