low-pass filter and prehistoric fuzz

Post by hieronymous » Tue Jan 03, 2006 12:06 pm

With all this talk recently of the Bass MURF and the new delays, how about a post featuring the good ol' MF-101?

I recorded and mixed this over the past couple of days:

motorized mammoth (sorry, link's gone, but at the moment you can hear it at myspace.com/hieronymous)

Both basses are basically the same signal chain, though only the "air bass"* uses the MF-101, and I think I EQ'd them a tiny bit differently at the preamp:
Gibson Melody Maker Bass--> EH Black Finger compressor--> MXR 10-band EQ--> Z.Vex Woolly Mammoth bass fuzz--> Big Briar MF-101 Low-Pass Filter--> Roland RE-201 Space Echo--> Alembic F2-B preamp--> Protools (Mac OS9!!!)

I wasn't originally planning on posting this here, or I would have incorporated the MF-104. Also, beware: the low-frequencies are pretty extreme. I got the MXR EQ to try and tame some of the sub-bass that the mighty Gibson mudbucker pickup puts out, but I think I need to do a little more tweaking. If I could do it all over again, I might make it a little shorter, and turn up the delay on the air bass. But I think it's a pretty good representation of one of my favorite sounds - fuzz through the low-pass filter.

:evil: no zombies were harmed during recording. :evil:

*"Air bass" terminology borrowed from Magma - the corresponding term being "earth bass"

Really enjoy your sound/bass/moog adventures. MF101 on bass is tasty indeed.
You are a scholar and a gentleman.
