Oscillator 2: no sound

Post by scd » Tue Feb 11, 2014 4:27 pm

Maybe someone can help me out here:
When I try to use osc2 as a sound source I can not get it to work (Voyager RME), however when using osc2 as a modulation source oscillator 2 works. So there seems to be something wrong with the audio of osc2.
What I did so far is disconnect the VX-351 and 352, init a patch, turn of osc1 and osc3 and turn on osc2 and set level fully open. No sound.
When using one of the mod busses and program osc2 as source I can use it on filter, osc3 pitch etc. So the oscillator itself seems to be working, but is not producing audio, or something in the mixer is broken?

Is there a way to check this to be 100% certain before sending it to Moog?
Is there a way to reset the Voyager that it might get this osc2 to work again?

Not happy :(

Boele

Call or email Moog. They most likely will have a much better idea of what's going in than any of us.

I don't mean this as an insult, but are you sure the at OSC 2 is switched to "ON"? Even if it is on the panel, is it ON for that particular patch? Sometimes it's the simple things! :D

No worries, every idea is appreciated. But yes, I did change the oscillator 2 on/off switch, its level knob, all oscillator2 controls, did an init patch several times, disconnected all cables, turned it off/on a few times etc.
By now I am pretty sure oscillator 2 is broken, that is, it's audio path. All modulation works, even when turning on sync (I can hear it is working by the modulation it produces).

I find it pretty bad for a 14 months old synth, that only sat in my studio and did not make a lot of hours either (I also have a Voyager XL). And I also came across a few other posts about broken oscs.

But first lets wait for the reply by Moog to my email.

Hi,

head up, my friend!

It isn't a totally broken oscillator, if it does do modulations.

There is no way to reset it in a special way. And I know your are an very advanced synthesizer user. So I don't think you are doing something wrong.

Here in Germany I would call Rudi Linhard for help.

It is more likely one of the many built in Texas Instruments multiplexer chips is faulty. They are sending the analog voltages generated on the digital boards D/A converters to control all parameters of the analog board. So this is not rocket science to fix.

These Voyager use many, many more electronic parts than a vintage Minimoog. More parts always means a higher chance for something going bad. And the analog board of the Voyager uses 50+ internal CVs to shape the sound fully analog. This beast is a real complex thing.
keep on turning these Moog knobs

Prodigy * minimoog '79 * Voyager * MF102 * MF103 * MF104z * MP201 * Taurus 3 * Minitaur * Sub Phatty * MF105 * Minimoog 2017+ MUSE * One 16 (sold)

Hi Till,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I am 100% sure now that there is something broken. I've discovered that after a cold start oscillator 2 is working for 10 minutes or so. Then the level starts to randomly fall away (like there is a bad cable connection) and after a few minutes more the sound is totally gone. Must be some broken part(s) that start failing when the temperature is rising.
Moog support still did not reply though :-(
And I am not sure where the thing should be send to either: the Netherlands is not on their list of distributors.

I had exactly the same problem, all got solved by opening it up and pushing all connectors. Several were is little loose. This can happen when moving/shipping the instrument.
