Little Phatty Mod Wheel problem

Post by christopherrowand » Wed Oct 30, 2013 6:58 pm

Hi everyone,

My mod wheel seems to be busted. It began intermittently at first and now is completely unresponsive. I tested it over midi in Logic and no controller data appears.

When I switch on Phatty it defaults to full on modulation and does not change when the wheel is moved around. I am assuming it is a hardware fault and nothing in software I overlooked.
I am running the latest OS3.12.

I read a few similar problem posts, but no one suggested workarounds or solutions if any were found...

I can cure the stuck modulation using another midi keyboard to send mod wheel data over midi, but it's not ideal.

Anyone have any ideas?

If you are comfortable with it, pull off the end panel(s) then the mod wheel and see if there are any loose connectors. From memory, I don't remember if both panels need to come off or just the left side. There is nothing more in there than a potentiometer and the mechanism/springs for return of pitch and wiring. Pots don't usually go bad all at once unless you managed to physically damage it by spilling something inside or hacking it up with a screwdriver or maybe an ice pick; unlikely.

The good news is that a new assembly is inexpensive (something like $30). Worth buying one just to have a spare.

Thanks for the reply.
I took off the left end cheek, to be met only with a solid panel. Perhaps earlier models have a different panel. Anyway I think I will get Source Distribution to fix it as I am planning to get the CV out mod for it anyway. May as well leave it to the pros!! I'm not terribly comfortable taking my lovely little Moog into surgery mode. I'm too squemish, especially with an ice pick.

It's a puzzle (the way in which it is put together).

If you remove both end cheeks, you'll find that the control panel is loose and I suppose you need to lift it (being careful of attached wiring) then go piece by piece until you get in there. I had my LP open twice and as I mentioned above, memory is foggy!

The Voyager LHC comes out two screws but a different story here I suppose. Better safe than sorry and have our dealer take care of it for you.

I've been moving my gear around and once again appreciate the build quality in my Tribute. It's not Taurus III heavy but there was no cost cutting in materials when this thing was built. And I appreciate the silk screen panel! Thanks again Moog...

(I'm about to replace my keyboard and will document the disassembly on a website that I'm in the midst of building. It's been far too long, not being able to post pictures here)
