New vintage sound packs: guess the timbre sources

Post by dswo » Sat Sep 28, 2013 12:47 pm

I was really hoping that Arctic Pro Synth would come out this week, but in its place we got three new Animoog expansion packs: Monster Moog, Vintage Vibe, and Vintage FX. Samples can be found here: http://www.moogmusic.com/news/monster-m ... ks-animoog.

I didn't get the FX pack right away, because I assumed that FX meant "sound effect presets." That was a mistake: these are samples, rather, that have already been phased, chorused, and otherwise FXed up. This was the last pack I bought, but might well end up being my favorite.

What's in the other two? Here's what I've been able to infer from studying the timbre names.

The official description of Monster says, "crafted using harmonic content extracted from new and classic Moog instruments including a System 15 Modular, Minitaur, 904a Filter, Freq Box, Bode Frequency Shifter, Sub Phatty, and more." If you have a Little Phatty or Sub Phatty, this pack will wedge some of its mojo into your iPad or iPhone: specifically, an overdriven Sub Phatty sawtooth, an overdriven Sub Phatty pulsewave, what looks like an overdriven Little Phatty sawtooth (hard synced), and a Little Phatty square wave. That's in addition to a Minitaur octave saw and several System 15 waves. The bulk of the new timbres (over 100) specify an oscillator waveform and an effect or filter; the OSC source is not specified.

Vintage Vibe "was created using vintage synthesizer VCOs and Filters to shape unique timbral content, resulting in Timbres and Presets with the sound and vibe of the beloved synths of the 1980’s." Which synths, exactly? Here are my best guesses, based on the timbre names and the presets that use them:

80 = Yamaha CS-80?
904a = something filtered by a Moog 904a low-pass filter
4072 = ARP 2601 v2 or something else that uses the 4072 LP filter
CMOS = EDP Wasp?
SallenKey = Korg MS-20?
VactrolLPG = Buchla ????
Diode = EMS VCS-3?

Again, these are just guesses. Perhaps someone else can improve on them. Keep in mind also that, no matter what hardware the timbre was sampled from, it's still being processed by a Moog filter.
