Deciphering Flying Lotus- Sub P Demo

Post by enfermo » Sat Sep 21, 2013 4:20 pm

I listen to this and I think how in the hell did he put this all together. Did he have more than 1 sub phatty to work with? There is so much going on. It is hard to imagine him recording 1 track at a time with the sub p and putting it together, one track after another.

I think he sampled some short clips/sounds from the sub p. Chopped it up, maybe or maybe not put it in a sampler, and made a skeleton beat. Then maybe laid some live playing over it and added longer lines of playing. Last added some other modulations/fx stuff to finish it off.

What do you guys think?

when i listen to that track i can hear all the different sounds he's using to make that track.

i suspect he is using live, but could be another midi editor, and is simply sending fast syncopated midi loops to the sub and dumping them down to audio tracks and sequencing when he has a variety of loops to work with.

he also using gliding pad sounds to fill it out.

and also he's doing some tweaking of some loops live to give movement. prob midi loops which are played into the sub and then he's turning knobs on the sub while an audio track dumps down and he's picked the best bits to sequence into the track.

sounds like he has some sidechain compression on the bass drum sound, but could be a master bus compressor flagging it all down.

a lot of the magic here is good presets to work with and fast moving syncopated midi loops. try 16th notes and then add movement in the quantization.

cheers
