VCF question

Post by writeroxie » Fri Nov 11, 2005 7:08 am

this is a total newbie question... but i usually just turn the knobs until it 'sounds good' to me. anyway, i'm wondering how the VCF's ADSR should be set to get a long smooth sweep (from an almost completely closed to a completely open filter). I want it to continue to sweep too (open and close). i can get it to open, but i cant get it to shut and repeat while holding the same key. this is on my source, not that it should matter

If you get it opening the filter, then just set the sustain of the filter ebvelope to zero.

Beginners tip for full filter opening and closing by the envelope:

- set the filter modulation by the envelope to zero and set the filter cutoff then to that the sound isa filtered as low as needed.
- then set the envelope of the filter like this:
zero ATTACK, zero DECAY, max SUSTAIn, zero RELEASE.
- hold a key now and set the filter envelope modulation to the amount till you got the desired max opened filter.
- then set the timings of the filter envelope and the sustain as needed. Setting the Sustain to zero will give you the max sweep range for the decay.
Try different timings on the ATTACK and DECAY. Ans set the REALEASE to mach the desired playing style and sound.

I hope this helps you as much as it helped me understanding analogue synths about 25 years ago while using my Moog Prodigy (still working fine and sounding great!))
keep on turning these Moog knobs
