Solution: No Sound Moog + Logic + Mac

Post by djmike » Thu Apr 25, 2013 11:21 am

Hi everyone. Just the proud new owner of a Moog Little Phatty Stage II. About near pulled my hair out trying to get sound to logic. Saw this problem in a lot of places with no solution all over the net.

The overlooked problem for me was simple. The input volume slider was set way too low. Sometimes it changes on it's own I believe.
System Preferences > Sound > Input
Select: "Line in - Audio line-in port"
Set the slider all the way up. Press keys on Moog to see you're getting full signal. You won't hear anything.

In logic, create a new "Audio" track
Input: Input 1
Output: Output 1-2
Check Input Monitoring or the Little "I" on the Track so sound will come thru live.
Start Playing and you should hear the Moog.
Create a new "External Midi" track that will control the Moog
Select "Little Phatty SE II" in the Library Panel and one of the patches.
Make some midi notes (piano roll etc) and they should play.

My Moog is hooked up via USB for midi, and Audio 1/4" mono with 1/8" mono adapter going to the Audio Input port on my iMac.

My Connections:
iMac 21.5" with Audio line-in port
1/4" Mono
1/8" Mono Male to 1/4" Mono Female adapter
USB for Midi

I went pretty crazy while overlooking the simple line in level mistake. After half a day, and exchanging different audio cables, I started thinking that I needed a preamp/audio interface because the sound was so low. I went as far as to hook it up thru my DJ Mixer (which has preamps) just to see if it worked. I finally figured out that the Line in level.

I've read several sources that suggest it's best to go directly into your Mac for best quality. Good news since I didn't feel like shopping for an audio interface, and it sounds clean.
