FM with Voyager - help needed

Post by tutenchamun » Tue Sep 18, 2012 12:30 am

I am kindastuck with producing FM based sounds with my new Xl.

By now I even think its somehow broken.

I fail even in reproducing the most basic sounds FM 1:2, 1:3 etc...

I realy have tried a lot of VCO1/VCO3 combinations with FM turned on.
here are the issues

- all sounds achieved so far are nothing special - if I compare it with i.E my nord stage 2 basic FM
the voyager FM sounds more distortd rather than metal, bell or so ..
- as soon as I try to,play the keyboard up or down, the sound falls apart (clicking, changing character, etc.)
no matter if keyb. tracking is on or off.
- further more it seems sometimes, that VCO3 after finetuning a sweeter spot, cannot hold its tune, it almost feels like a self regulation
- i cannot find a suitable waveform for VCO3, SIN is missing ?!

Any help like, step-by-step tutorial patch for a simple FM sound is very welcome.
Which waveforms to use, ovtave setting, keep sound persistent throughout the keyboard, ...
Just one patch to show that my unit works and that the real problem is me ;-)
By now, I realy think there is something wrong with my unit.

The FM switch is exponential FM and a fixed modulation depth. Try using FM through the MOD2 buss, it is linear FM and you can vary the depth. Don't expect accurate pitch ala DX-7 though, FM is only effective with rock-solid oscillators and razor-accurate modulation depth.
