Introduction - new member (+ music)
Hi all,
Just wanted to introduce myself. I am a new member of the forum. I recently bought a Slim Phatty. This is my first ever Moog product (apart from Animoog) although it is not the last, because since then I have ordered a CP251, which I should receive quite soon. This will be used both to control the Slim Phatty, and also to connect it to my MFB Microzwerg for some semi modular action . . .
Since I bought the Phatty, I have used it in two tracks. The first is my own, and the second is a cover of Gary Numan's "Airlane". The Phatty is the bass in both tracks. It generates far more bass than anything else I own; so much so that I am finding it quite difficult to keep it under control.

Welcome to the forum, Daniel! I'm currently at work and don't have access to speakers, so I can't listen to your music right this moment. I'll be sure to listen later when I'm at home. Congratulations on the new Moog products; you're in for a world of fun.

Re: Introduction - new member (+ music)
Thanks
I am very pleased with the Slim Phatty. I've had it for a long enough to get a bit of perspective on it, and I've used it in two tracks with a third on the way. I don't think it is the kind of synth I could fall madly in love with. However it is the kind of synth I will probably use in most or all of my music, because it is so accessible and because it sounds excellent. I tend to get rid of synths that I don't use, so it seems I will be keeping the Phatty.
A very short review:
Pros:
- The best non-one-function-per-knob editing system I've ever used. Very intuitive and quick.
- Sounds excellent
- Loads of bass.
- Very fast and plucky envelopes.
- Filter overload sounds fantastic
- Seems to be very well built.
- Great oscillator sync sound.
Cons:
- The LEDs are so dazzlingly bright that I can't see the labels on them in dim light.
- Modulation a bit limited. the CP251 + Microzwerg should fix this
- A multi-mode filter would have been nice.
Also, I'm using a Roland keyboard as controller, which has the silly joystick thing instead of a mod wheel. This is not ideal, since it springs back to zero when you let go. Obviously, this isn't the Phatty's fault . . .

Soundwise, how does Animoog compare to the LP? That's a serious question, BTW, even though it sounds like a joke. I have no iPod or iPad, so never played with Animoog.

Minitaur, CP-251, EHX #1 Echo, EHX Space Drums/Crash Pads, QSC GX-3, Pyramid stereo power amp, Miracle Pianos, Walking Stick ribbon controller, Synthutron.com, 1983 Hammond organ, dot com modular.

To be honest, I never really "got" Animoog. I played with it a few times and that was it.
I normally prefer to use my iPad as a controller rather than as an instrument. I only use iPad instruments for doodling on the train . . .

Re: Introduction - new member (+ music)
As much as I hate to say it, the two really aren't comparable. For starters, Animoog isn't really a synthesizer, so much as it is a sample playback app that has a lot of processing options. The only way to get it to sound analog is to select an analog sounding sample from the initially limited sample library. It is not trying to sound like an analog synth. It is something completely unique, and I like it for what it is.Voltor07 wrote:Soundwise, how does Animoog compare to the LP? That's a serious question, BTW, even though it sounds like a joke. Re: Introduction - new member (+ music)
Welcome, Daniel. Excellent production value on your tracks. The Numan cover was spot-on. You'll love the Phatty, it's true, but it'll probably just pull you deeper into the world of Moog. I started out much the same, began with a Slim, picked up a CP-251, then a Freqbox, then a Ring-mod, Clusterflux, LPF, Delay, and finally a Voyager. Haha. (all I need is a Murf, a Phaser, and a Taurus, then I can start on the vintage models, ha)
Re: Introduction - new member (+ music)
One thing I love about the Voyager is the ability to disable keyboard control over osc 3. It sounds useless, and before I tried it I thought it would be one of those things that I just don't use, but in practice I have found infinite use for it. It really adds a whole new branch of possibilities, including the ability to make the Voyager sound duophonic

Thanks! I admit that the Moog stuff is attractive; we'll see how long I can resist it

The lead in the Numan cover, BTW, is my Korg Radias, which I think does a pretty good job of nailing the original Polymoog sound.
