Voyager Software Vs 351

Post by kilgoretrout » Tue Apr 26, 2005 8:01 pm

I have a MMV Signature, a ton of moogers (8 I think), a 351 and 2 251s. I am running OS 2.5 and I also have the Soundtower software.

Is there something that the 351 adds that the software won't allow when you are running OS 2.5? It seems to me that there is a ton more modulation routing than ever before and that a lot of the flexibility I gained through the 351 has been replaced with the editor.

Well, for one thing, it gives you a lot of CV sources without tying up a mod buss or Pot Mapping setting. You can use this to control your Foogers, or control the V-ger itself.

For example:
You can patch the Filter Env CV out to the Env Rate CV in. Now you can shape the curves of the envelope. Put it through one of the Attenuators on the way for variable filter slopes.

Patched Smoothed S+H to Wave CV in for a slightly drifting waveshape. Use a software patch to send the triangle LFO to the pitch of Osc 2, and send Smoothed S+H to the Osc. 3. Presto! The much-vaunted analog drift, unpredictibility and "liveness".

Patch the Pressure CV out to your Moogerfooger Delay's Mix input. Now you can bring your echo in and out with aftertouch. While you're at it, patch the Mod Wheel CV out to the Delay Time CV in. Now you can sweep the delay time with the mod wheel. Try using it as a "finger vibrato". Now patch the Pedal Buss CV out to the Feedback CV in, and rock it dub-styley by moving your foot.

You get the picture. By itself, the 351 isn't so sexy. It's when you use it with other gear that it begins to get cool.

I just noticed that you've got 2 251s!

Man, you can do a lot! Patch those S+H CVs through a lag processor and make your own "smoothed" version! Send your square wave LFO through one and vary the waveshape by varying the lag!

Patch the CV out of your Fooger filter into the CV In of a CP251's LFO. Now you've got an LFO that speeds up when you play your guitar harder. Or send the CV through an inverter before hitting the Rate. Send your lead vocal to the Fooger. Now you have an LFO that's nice and slow and subtle when the singer is doing his thing. Singer boy shuts up, LFO gets all fast and crazed.

Patch an LFO into the mult. Now, send the signal from one jack to the Delay Time input of your Fooger Delay. Send the signal from the second jack through a lag processor, and then into the Time input of a second delay. Send the third through a different lag processor, and to a third delay. Now you've got a 3-phase chorus!

The possibilities really are endless. Man, I hope to save up enough cash for a 351 and 251 soon!

Actually, what I meant to say was:

You probably don't need all that CV junk now that your OS is updated. You should try to find some kind-hearted individual who'll take that stuff off your hands. Being the kind and generous soul that I am, I hereby volunteer to do it! Heck, I might even not make you pay me! Image

Hi,
I have only one 251 rack mounted with the 351...How does your second 251 get power? Is it daisy-chained to the first 251? Or is it running of external power supply?
I have been thinking about a second 251 as well...or maybe some other modules from some other german company we shall not mention.

P.S.
I was hoping Moog would make another 251 (MKll) with an invertable saw LFO, and maybe a sine. Just a thought.
