help! broken RME

Post by peeddrroo » Tue Jan 31, 2012 6:45 am

well, i don't know what happened this morning, but my RME seems to be broken.
the symptoms: first, there's no sound out, except for a tiny noise that occurs randomly. then the LFO LED is flashing at high speed all the time, no matter what the knob is set to.
i smelt like a fried component at some point, but i could be wrong.

the only thing that i could point as an "anomaly" in what i did this morning, is that i was sending a Mackie Out control MIDI signal to the RME, and so it may have been overflowed with MIDI data. but i think it was already the case yesterday, and i don't think it could be a reason for it to break.

i tried reinstalling the OS (3.5) but it didn't help.

i don't know what to do and i really need this machine to be working asap as i have commitments.
is there any way to do a hardware reset? (like switching the RME on while pushing a button...)
if any of you have heard of similar things, your feedback is most welcome!
thanks
pierre

ok, i've found another symptom: all the continuous knobs of the control panel don't seem to work ; all the buttons and knobs with "stops" (ie LFO sync, MW Dest, OSC Octave...) display a change on the LCD screen, but when i change the value of continuous knobs, nothing happens...

You cannot fix a broken part by a reset or software update.
I guess you need a repair office.

thanks for your answer.
yes, i guess software update won't help much.

i notice something weird though: ALL continuous control knobs (Cutoff, Volume, MW Amount...) aren't displayed on the LCD screen when i change their values, whereas the non continuous ones seem to work ok (LFO sync, Octave, MW Destination and so on...)
so there might be a software issue as well...
i managed to see the LFO rate change using the Librarian editor, but couldn't get any sound, whatever the settings.

Sounds like a defective CPU board, especially the ADC circuit on it. Sorry, but this looks bad.
But I don't think it's anything you did. Synths can't be damaged by MIDI data overflows.

They can't even be damaged by ground loops thru MIDI cables either, as the input is opto-isolated.

Hope yours is still under warranty...

yeah, seems my unit needs to be serviced...
not under warranty unfortunately...

BUT
i want to give kuddos to the support team for the excellent and quick feedback. they tried to find a solution and were very helpful.
they oriented me to their partner in France who was also very reactive.
so my heart is a bit lighter (and i guess my bank account will soon be, too).

i'll update you if there's anything to be learned from my experience.
