ableton live -> slim phatty routing issues

Post by robot32 » Mon Jan 30, 2012 11:59 am

Hello!

The short story is I bought a slim phatty and it doesn't modulate/moog-ify any sound going into it - with the setup I have matched in the quote box below

I recently bought a Moog Slim Phatty [SP], which is my first hardware synth - and I was planning on using the USB interface from the SP along with a simple Alesis Q49 USB keyboard. The idea was to not buy extra midi modules and cables, but instead just use USB, and setup Live to route the tracks to and from the SP properly.

I was under the impression that I could send audio from a VST like Kontakt or Reaktor [or just a simple recorded audio track], route that audio to the SP for extra awesomeness, and then back to the master channel so I could actually hear it.

I am pretty frustrated, very confused, and super clueless at this point as to how to get this thing set up properly so I can start making some more cool stuff. Any insight on this matter would be extremely helpful! :D

I have followed a previous user's post for a completely USB driven setup, but with no success::

Currently I have the SP set to Track - on, Sync - on, and Remote - off
open a audio track it name it Phatty Audio
open a midi track with the External Instrument on,
set the drop down box to MIDI TO as USB Audio Device (this is my slim phatty yours might be named different) and the next drop down box to ch1
on the midi track the MIDI FROM I left as All ins & All channels
Set Monitor to to Auto
Set Audio to to Phatty Audio (this is the audio track u named before)

On the audio track next set Audio From to Ext. in & 3 (3 is the channel i have the slim phatty audio going in my focusrite pro 24 (sound card) make the channel that the slim is on in your Sound card it muted so you dont get fedback
Set Monitor to In
Set Audio To to Master

I have to set the Track Delay to -35 ms on the Audio TrAck

To send audio, put a clip that you wish to send on a audio channel and from the Audio To drop down menu select a channel on your sound card that is connected to the Audio in of the Slim Phatty. You should now be able to hear your clip via the channel that you're using to monitor the Phatty.

Does the SP need to be plugged into a sound card? I was under the impression that connecting through USB would be taking care of that, unless USB functionality was meant strictly for midi?

Thanks in advance! :>

not to assume you dont know, but the LP/SP do not send or recieve audio over the USB. The USB is midi only. In order to hear audio from the SP in ableton, you need to connect the audio out of the SP to an audio in on your computer, then configure ableton to 'listen' to that particular audio input (configurable in the audio tab in the preference menu).

In order to get audio into the LP, you need to output audio from your computer/audio interface (or any other instrument), and plug that into the audio in on the SP.

So here's the setup that I've attempted to work with, as it sounds like it makes logical sense..

1. Maverick Audio TubeMagic D1 DAC/AMP outputs to SP
2. SP outputs to mixerboard
3. Mixerboard outputs to my computer again. The mixerboard is capable of sending audio through the USB output of the interface, I've connected microphones and guitar amps up to the mixerboard before with just USB to my pc and that method has worked perfectly for me.

Result is still nothing, even if I just connect the Tubemagic D1 to the input of the SP, nothing comes out of the headphone port of the SP either way.

So I tried another approach, running audio to the mixerboard, output to the SP input port, SP output to a track input, and plug headphones into the monitor port of the mixer - no results from the SP still.
Then I make one more small adjustment to route the final audio back to my pc, and listen to it from my pc instead, and stilllll nothing from the SP - just the vanilla audio track with no moogy-ness injected to it.

At this point, is it safe to say I bought a dead SP? Or is there something else I'm still doing wrong here?

Please don't kill me when I suggest you check the volume knob on the SP...I know of several users here (myself included) who have forgotten to look at the volume...if it's all the way down, you won't get any sound.

Or the master output switch. If thats off, you will only hear anything out of the headphone jack from the SP itself... But again, if the volume is zero, then you would still hear nothing then...

I connect my bass to Audio in. Then I connect a cable to the keyboard gate ( loose - not connected to antydning om the other end ) to open the gate. Then I have to disable the occilator and I now get sound thru the Slim Phatty.

dude, so i was able to run the midi interface out to the moog in, and i put the midi interface out into the audio interface in, and tried that... but it only picked up a mono signal... which is i guess better than nothing... i am happy enough that it works that way, but it still doesn't make sense !!! haha

If you want stereo, you need another Phatty...the Moog Phatty series only has one filter, unlike the Voyager which is still two channel mono, even with dual filters...hmm...monophonic instruments seems to be the only thing Moog builds...interesting.
