Have you had any offers? Do you still have the moog prodigy?

The post date is from 2005. I doubt a sale can still be arranged.
Re: moog prodigy for sale
I have decided to sell my Prodigy after nearly 30 years (bought new in 1982) but I don't know the best way to go about it?
Someone said just put it on eBay, but I've no experience of that, so am a bit reluctant.
It's never been gigged, and is immaculate. Fully functional, serviced and calibrated. Everything works perfectly, and is original (no repro knobs!) and it's virtually completely unmarked - even the end cheeks! I've even got the original owners manual somewhere!
The ones I've seen on EBay usually say 'good condition', but the photos appear to show some real wrecks.
Are good Prodigys rare, and does it make much difference to the price, if it really is in top condition?
I know it's nearly my first post, but I'm only asking for a little advice. It's not spam - honest!

If it truly is in the condition you say it's in, I'd pay as much as 800 USD. Vintage Synth Explorer prices the synth at 700 USD if it's mint, but because the Prodigy is in such high demand, you could most likely get upwards of 1000 USD on eBay. Craigslist might also be a good idea, depending on what area you are in. Bigger cities of course tend to have a better market for vintage synthesizers than small farm towns.

Re: moog prodigy for sale
Thanks for your response. My market is probably a bit limited by the fact I'm in the UK then!
220V version (336BX model - 2nd edition), so not really an option for a US sale. Thanks for the price indicators though.
Looks like I might have ago at eBay then - see if I get ripped off or not!!
Or maybe I'll try a UK advert in a specialised mag or something. Sounds as if it's worth selling though.
I had a feeling it might be. When the Prodigy first arrived in the UK at the end of 1981, it was obviously a great little synth -so I bought one.
I can remember thinking at the time - a real two oscillator Moog, with a 'proper' VCF, at a less than silly price.
(The Minimoog was then a silly price here in the UK).
Still is actually!

Re: moog prodigy for sale
Hi. I'm in the UK as well. If I had any money I might be interested in buying your Prodigy
but the reason I'm posting is to give some advice on ebay in case it's useful.
If you haven't used ebay previously then you won't have a rating from previous sales. You could wait before advertising the Prodigy, and do some buying and selling of small items to give yourself a rating, but probably the best way to approach things would be the simpler one of offering the buyer the option of collecting the synth and paying you cash. If I was buying from someone with no previous feedback I'd feel more confident if I knew I could check the synth out - in fact I prefer to do that anyway, both so I know for sure what I'm paying for and so it doesn't go through the post. For a good instrument it's worth driving halfway across Britain if necessary.
The only other lingering doubt I can imagine any potential buyer having is if it might have been stolen, so if you could prove how long you've had it, that might help. But if you sound genuine to the buyer, that shouldn't be a problem, I think.
Regarding how to list it, you obviously don't want to sell it for a low price, so you could choose to put a reserve price on it, or a high starting price. Ebay regularly offer free listings, meaning you pay them their cut if the item sells, but you don't have to pay to place the listing. If you were to wait for one of those free weekend listings you could comfortably put a high reserve or high starting price on, knowing you wouldn't be paying ebay for doing that even if the synth didn't sell.
The other way to list it would be to find someone to list it for you if you know someone with a good ebay rating. If you live within a reasonable distance of me in north Cheshire I might be able to do that for you. We could discuss that further if you wanted. On the other hand if you did that then you wouldn't get your first ebay feedback rating from this sale, so listing it yourself might be preferable for that reason. (If I did list it for you I'd want to meet up and check out the synth myself, as it would be my ebay reputation I'd be putting on the line. The synth would stay with you of course and the buyer collect from you - you obviously wouldn't hand it over to me in case I disappear with it. I'd be willing to list it if I felt ok about it in return for the opportunity to try it for a little while and maybe record it, as the only Moog I've ever played is the Voyager I own.)

Re: moog prodigy for sale
Hi Sweep - many thanks for your very helpful post. As I say, I'm a complete novice when it comes to eBay, so your comments are much appreciated. Thanks for your offer to consider listing, but I really couldn't be much further from you - I'm right on the south coast!!
Following on from your comments, I think I'll try the 'buyer collects and pays cash' route. That way I'd solve the problems of the synth not being what it claims, the risk of damage in transit, and the certainty of getting paid, all in one go!
I'm going to do a short video demo of all the functions working - with a back drop of a dated newspaper - to prove it wasn't done 5 years ago!
That, together with reasonably high def photos to show the actual condition should help to convince a potential buyer that it's the genuine thing.
Interesting comment about ownership. I no longer have the orignal purchase receipt. In fact I'm not sure I ever had one. I bought it from my employer at the time (I was a tech for a music shop) and I don't remember ever seeing the actual sales receipt. I do still have the original letter I received from Moog, following some queries I had about the extra CV jacks. The owners manual had been printed for the original single jack version, and I needed clarification of the new jack functions.
i was wrong to say I bought it in 1982 --the letter reminds me that it was actually 1981!
The letter itself is quite interesting. Moog products in the UK were being marketed by Norlin at that time, and my query had been to them. They in turn passed it to Moog in the Netherlands, who replied to me. The main heading address though was still Moog in Buffalo NY.
All now gone I think?
Copy of that letter here . Confirms some technical details of the extra jacks, so may be of general interest anyway.
I'm in no hurry to sell - so I'd rather wait and try and make sure it goes to a good home - and I think a genuine buyer might travel a few miles, just to check it out, as you suggest.
Think I might try a reserve of £500, see what happens. Or, as you suggest, wait for a 'free listing' on eBay.
Thanks again for your helpful comments

Re: moog prodigy for sale
Hi, yes the south coast is rather too far.
As you're not in a hurry to sell you'll have time to watch ebay prices. Old analogue synths have been rising steadily, so waiting may well be the best thing you can do.
When you're ready to sell it may be best to mention it here again before listing it on ebay. I'm not the only British person here - and in fact I mentioned your Prodigy to another Moog player earlier today who lives much closer to your end of the country. He wasn't interested at the moment, but that may change, and in any case someone may be willing to travel. If I was after a Prodigy I'd consider a journey like that; it's only too far for me to try it out and not buy.

Well, I've had a go at making a video, to try and show that everything works. You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hExz24-jTBU
Hopefully , that would be enough to convince a prospective buyer that it's the real thing, and worth coming to have a look at!
I also did a pdf of some higher resolution photos, to try and show the actual condition of my Prodigy. I've posted that up here: http://www.arjay1949.webspace.virginmed ... oog/MP.pdf (It's about 8MB)

Re: moog prodigy for sale
I just acquired a MOOG Prodigy 336A.
I understand the rarity of the item, but I am looking to sell. I do not know the value though.
The prodigy is in MINT condition. Not a scratch, ding, stain, or flaw in the entire piece.
We fired it up and all functions and dials work perfectly.
I want to know if there are any good sites to sell on other than ebay, like moog or synth specialty sites.
What's a good asking price?

Re: moog prodigy for sale
As I mentioned in my post above, I have a Prodigy in excellent condition too (although not quite 'mint' --it has tiny scuffs on the end cheeks!).
I currently have it on ebay with a starting price of £525, which seems to be round about the going rate for good ones. Maybe a little more if I'm lucky.
Two things that also affect the value:
Although you say you've 'fired it up, and everything works', has it been regularly serviced over the years?
The switches can need cleaning to ensure reliable operation, and the oscillator scaling may need calibrating, for example.
Is it a second edition version, with factory fitted external control jacks? Although you can get the earlier units modified, the factory mods are preferred, and make the unit much easier to interface with modern MIDI kit, like the Kenton PRO.
Both of those points, in addition to the cosmetic condition, can affect the value.
A 'mint' Prodigy, second edition, with a full service history, would probably fetch around £500 - £700.
At the other end of the scale, a rough one, with knobs missing, and descriptions like 'only needs a bit of soldering to get it all working' can, amazingly, still fetch £300 - £400.
And in reality, some of them will never work properly again!!
In truth, places like Ebay seem to set the value, whether we like it or not, and as with all auctions, it will only be worth what it makes on the day.
The Prodigy is a lovely little synth, but it is 30 year old technology.......

Re: moog prodigy for sale
Well, I put it on ebay for a week. Not one bid!!
Amazingly, it was on at the same time as two others, with some quite serious damage -- and one of them had a bid of over £300!
Funny old world......... Looks like it was an omen that perhaps I shouldn't sell it after all?

Re: moog prodigy for sale
Hello everybody!
I think is a bit late for this post, but I'm also searching for a moog prodigy! Is there anyone that can give any clue where to find one in a good condition if the one stated here is already sold?
