LP StageII & Logic Midi Issues

Post by fingerprint » Fri May 27, 2011 8:30 am

First of all i would like to say .. BIG UPS to Amos for the developments in the OS of the Phatty range... cheers!

Im hoping i can get some answers amongst the users to solve my midi issues.. Coming from MPC sync territory, i have recently gone back in the box(Logic 9,14) & have been wanting to have a fool proof midi setup for my external synths... all the others(3)(Nord, Virus, Novation) are working fine but the LP is not..
i was hoping the OS upgrade would resolve my issues but it might seem that its made it more confusing..??
does anybody have a guide to the LP setup in Logics ' Environment ' window? this is something that i cannot find anywhere & that Moog Tech suport will not assist me in.. ?
i was getting "Fatal Error " sign on LP when using old version 2.... it would shut down the LP..
Now im only able to get midi working in but not out of the sequencer.. (LP OS 3..)
its confused me in the last months & now im not sure weather i can do it at all? seems few use Logic & LP together...
If you have any incling as to why my system is not accepting midi pleae give me your advise... im open to any suggestions to get this solved..
Word!

Hi, this is how i'm working with Logic 9 and my Little Phatty 2

The recent update has helped a lot.

Firstly go in the menu of the Phatty, and make it so it only transmits keys and mod/pitch wheel midi. This is how i prefer it. If you want it to record your knob changes too, that's up to you - i prefer to do that 'manually' when recording in the audio. Leave LOCAL CONTROL on, assuming you still want to be able to use the little phatty to change presets etc.

Then in Logic, go to the environment, select 'midi' layer, and create a new midi instrument. Call it 'Little Phatty' or 'Moog' or whatever. In the inspector on the left, select the Little Phatty ii SE as the midi interface (assuming you're connected via USB). That's all you have to do.

Save this as part of your default 'autoload'/song template so it's always there and you don't have to do it again.

Now to use it, simply go and create an INSTRUMENT track in the arrange, and select 'External Audio Instrument'. In the first drop down, you should be able to see the Midi instrument that you just created in the environment, called 'Little Phatty' or 'Moog'. Select that.

In the next drop down, select the input in your audio interface that the LP is connected to

That's it! You should be able to write/record/playback the little phatty without any issues. It was a bit of a pain before the latest OS release.

Note: in an idea world, once you've played your midi part and you're happy with it and want to commit, you'd be able to use logic's 'bounce in place' - just select the midi region that you performed, right click and 'Bounce In Place'. However Logic currently doesn't support bounce in place in realtime (for when using external synths or hardware), so you'll have to insert an audio track and record to that. That's very easy, but it could be even more elegant and would require half the number of tracks.

Hope this helps and i didn't get the wrong end of the stick. You dodn't describe exactly what you were trying to achieve, so i thought i'd describe my set up anyway.

Cheers,

Eddie

Cheers Eddie for the reply!
That is a pretty standard setup which has worked for me with my other synths however the LP does work for me this way? (USB)
when i set this up with your directions i get midi signal into the track arrange window.. when i press record there is none.. no midi is recorded or even shown in the track?
got me puzzled...
but wait. then there was midi going in & recording tho holding the note on & not releasing.. but then try again & nothing...
im wondering if i need to set up specificaly in the Clicks & ports window of Environment ?
so confused.....
Delete the instrument in Environ & try again.. get midi signal on track but not recording...?
wierd thing is that i opened up Ableton (latest) , hooked the rounting up to LP (USB), worked a treat.. hook it Midi to MPC,, works as always...
something about LOGIC? tho i cant see the logic in it....
respect!

Love some feedback from Amos on this topic..
It's a wierd & random one.. Is there a best way to delete any preferences, reset the LP, or work around the problem?

as random as things are, the LP is now working in its Midi function with Logic... its likely to have been an issue with the Logic Environment window although i will add that i had also reset the LP to its Factory state prior to the workings....? which came first i cannot tell..
I have now used the SUM of the Inputs (3 keyboards) to control any output that is selected in the Arrange window.... This is not as preferable as the specific setup that i had intended where the Nord controlled the NOrd, the Virus contros controls the virus & the Moog controls the Moog..

if there are any suggestions as to the ideal setup id be happy to hear from you
respect
