Voyager and LP join forces

Post by praxisaxis » Tue Mar 08, 2011 12:26 am

Hey,
I've had my Voyager for about a month. Here's a tune I just finished which uses it + the LP in abundance. Please enjoy :) :)

All the bass is the Little Phatty which I believe still stacks up pretty well against the Voyager in the fat bass stakes. It has been interesting to notice how different the two instruments are, in sound and overall character. Please be tolerant of the non-Moog synths which make appearances ;)

p.s. Sorry, I couldn't find a general "post your songs here" type thread. Hope this is ok :)

Haha, "landlord's on your balls, have you paid your rent yet?"

Outstanding, mate. No doubt, you've seen "Dinner for Schmucks"...

Video editing was as good as the music and I mean that in a good way, nice job. I've never seen a Voyager touch pad played like that before.

Well done, man! Nice composition. So my question to you, a double-Moog owner, is as follows: What are the tonal differences between the two beasts to you? I have played both the Phatty and the Voyager and I know I'll own a Moog at some point. I was very impressed with the build quality of the V and similarly dissatisfied with the wiggly knobs and not-so-good keybed of the Phatty, but although I didn't get to play them next to each other I thought they both excelled at different tasks.

Thanks guys.

Nillerbabs, I'd say the LP is less complex, in operation and in sound. But in addition to that, I think the LP has a unique tonal quality, although it's hard to put my finger on or describe it properly. They certainly sound different - even purposefully attempting to make them sound the same is difficult. I haven't done any scientific-style comparisons as yet; suffice it to say that they are both identifiable within the same mix (that's evident in that clip I've posted here).

Personally I've found myself relegating the LP to "gritty," "fat," "raw" duty (often bass lines, like in my vid), while the Voyager automatically gets anything that needs prettiness or nuance. This is personal, but I'd rather play jazz licks on the Voyager. However that's not to say one can't do the other. And do be honest I'm still not fully in control of the Voyager - it's a complex instrument.

Also don't forget the LP has a couple of features not present on the Voyager; particularly "overload" (which can create a massively fat sound) and arpeggiator (on the Stage II and subsequent). Also, I reckon the LP build quality is second to none... I've had no probs with the buttons or keyboard, and the chassis is tank-like.

Both instruments are superb and I'd not trade a body part for either - both of them cut through a mix like other instruments can only dream about :) .

REALLY nice!

Love the tone @ 1:05. Any info on the settings for that?

Very nice take!
Reminds me a bit of the best of Gentle Giant times.

Did you use an LP bass preset or made the bass from scratch?

Thanks :) No, I long since over-wrote most of the factory presets. These days I use the LP much like a traditional synth and I don't fret too much about storing the presets. That's because the LP is so simple, it doesn't take all that long to dial up a patch, and this is good for finding a unique sound for each mix anyway. I do use the presets to navigate to whatever the last setting I was using, and I have a few very tricky ones stored (if I think I won't be able to remember how to achieve a particular effect).
