Filter overdrive question

Post by Mooch Foyager » Fri Jan 14, 2011 9:39 am

I'm posting this in the phatty forum, allthough I have a Voyager RME.

I do have a question for phatty owners though

Since the Voyager doesn't have filter overdrive, there's the trick of feeding it's right channel into the external audio input and sending it back to the filter.

This works till a certain degree. The button to control the input goes to 10, however between 8-10, when the overdrive starts sound big and phat, it also changes pitch sometimes, dropping to fifths or sevenths, and when pushing the drive really there's just allways rumbling, no pitch recognition at all.

Is this the same with the phatty? Can you push it's overdrive to the max and still be able to play notes over different octaves?

Can anyone give me or direct me to examples of the drive function?

I guess you are speaking about the overload? There really is no change in the pitch, you just feel it like a regular gain: The volume goes up and you can hear a little bit of distortion. Maybe you just pull the trigger too much with the voyager because you really want to feel a difference in your sound but I think you would be disapointed by hearing the effect of the overload on the phatty since it's not making a BIG difference. It's cool, it makes a very phat sound, but it's not as obvious as putting overdrive on a guitar. I just usually put it to the max and I would want to get some more :P.

ok, I have read now from another user, it is possible on the voyager to overload the filter too much so it sound like a big fart... best fart to man kind imo

So you need to find the sweet spot, I'm guessing the phatty is limited so it never exceeds the sweet spot.

thanks for the reply

I've never had the pitch change using overdrive on the SP. Whether you would find the amount of distortion provided ample is a matter of taste though: to me, on certain sounds - especially dependent on filter cutoff and resonance - it can sound quite hot and filthy. I reckon there's plenty of overdrive on the SP. I love it and it really does provide a whole extra dimension.

It's very adjustable, you can set it up so that it adds quite a cream and butter kind of effect, if you know what I mean - smoothing and slightly thickening. But if you want to totally destroy the sound then it doesn't do that, you would need to resort to an external effect. Sounds like the hack on the voyager goes waaaay beyond what the phatty can do.

As mentioned before, the LP overdrive really is an overdrive. It makes for some really awesome sounds (and the overdrive can actually be saved). It also really depends on the sounds how it reacts, some sounds will only become louder for the most part, but on the other hand it's an extra sound design tool. Due to the extreme gain it puts into the overdrive section the the 2 OSC interact with each other a lot wilder. Tiny differences in tuning can make for some awesome evolving stuff.

It really is more like a guitar pedal overdrive instead of the feedback trick. Although it seems the amount of gain it gets seems to be far more then a pedal. The sounds do get louder, but the limiting of the analog circuits really are defining the sound. The Overdrive does make it louder, but only to a certain point. After that it's amplitude is limited, like an overdrive ;)

The sound isn't altered in any other way, it won't go out of tune at all!

I ve never understood why moog didn't add overload to voyager's line....in the XL for example, it has everything but not the filter overload, that is one of the coolest thing i have ever heard. There is a technical reason or what?_? (The XL with overload will be the supreme analog killer machine!!!! )

Can't you just put a distortion or fuzz pedal in the voyagers mix in/out jack to create a similar effect to the phattys overdrive? Im sure one of devi evers pedals would work nicely in there (synthmangler?)
