Boards of Canada and Preset Question

Post by countlove » Tue Dec 28, 2004 11:21 pm

Ya know.. I have been a huge fan of BOA. I was really excited to pick up my moog, that had a defected MOD wheel. Now I am trying to figure out the process of presets.. I load up lets say Preset 76 which is sunshine lead (the most boards of canada preset)

I play something and and change one of the buttons.. Since I am changing the buttons is there some kind of preset setting before the dials I am moving around? Can I start out with a blank template and twist dials to get that Preset for number 76?

I am total newbie.. But I love this thing. Just have no friggen clue what I am doing.. heheh

Thanks!

Congrats on the Voyager. You'll be happy. The answers to your questions about the presets are in the manual. Other presets can be found on the moog website. Enjoy.

Nice job. Sorry for the RTFM response, but Moog did a good job with their manual. To get deeper into the subject, checkout Electronic Music by Allen Strange. It's out of print but you may find a copy at your library. Search these forums for more links to how these things work. I'm a newbie too, and that text has helped me out a great deal.

Count,

Agree with TunedLow on the Moog manual. For more info ono the topic, I'd suggest "Power Tools for Synthesizer Programming" by Jim Aikin. It's current and widely available. I found a copy at Barnes & Noble.

Cheers!

Thanks for all the help.. I am gonna pass up on the soundbanks I guess. Would be a better habbit if I just create my own banks instead of depending on preset bank.

Why pass on the soundbanks? They're free for the taking and can give you an idea of what the Voyager can do. I made my own custom sound bank after auditioning the presets in the four factory sound banks then picking and choosing the ones I liked best. From there, I tweaked a few until I was pleased with the lot. Now I have a unique bank of sounds that no one else has, and I learned a good but about the Voyager in the process.

I'd suggest you try it - you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain!

I will try them out.. I really like the Sunshine Lead number 75 or 76 from the default ones.. Thats the only one I like.. That preset just screams Boards of Canada..

Found that out of print book on Amazon.. Was 113 bucks for Very Good Condition..

Thanks for all the help!

Can I upgrade the Voyager from version 2.0 strait to 2.5? Do I need 2? If I have a preset done with 2.0 , will it be no good when I switch to 2.5? Should I even Upgrade the software on the synth?

Thanks!

**EDIT**
Go to the main Moog Music page, click on the "minimoog" tab and then either of the Voyager selections (Anniversary or Performer edition)... look for the big photo of the synth on the page that comes up, and click on the "software" link just to the right of the photo. The software download page has instructions for what you need to download.

OS versions 2.0 and below need to load version 2.1 as an intermediate step before upgrading to the latest version.

As for your presets, may I suggest that you back them up on your computer before upgrading? If this is possible it will provide insurance against any mishap; however as far as I know there should be no change to your preset sounds caused by upgrading from OS 2 to 2.5.

Enjoy your Voyager!
