Power Switch on Voyager Old School

Post by kimbo » Mon Nov 22, 2010 7:58 am

Hi All

Hope someone will be able to answer this as it doesn't really stste anything in the Manual...

Does anyone know if just by switching the VOS off from the power switch on the synth, if this actually switches off the mains, or is it merely on 'standby'?
The reason I ask is that currently I'm switching off at the synth, then I'm switching off at the mains socket also.
(would be a lot better if I knew I could just switch off from the synth)!

I know that by simply opening it up will answer my query, but wondered if anyone would already know this, and save me from doing this?

Cheers

Interesting question...

The only consumer electronics I know to go on standby are tube amplifiers (to warm up the valves before you start playing) and remote controlled devices such as TVs.

On this fact alone, I am 99.999999999999% certain the power switch will kill the juice to the VOS. What's the point of having a switch otherwise?

Many thanks for that, and I agree as I think the same.
It's just that some switches on components (I have a PA Amp as an example), whereby the switch is wired on the DC output side and therefore although switches the item off, it doesn't actually turn the internal transformer off, as would do if wired via the AC side.
Like you correctly say, I can't think of any reason why it would only switch it merely to standby.
In the 'good olde days' a 'power' switch was exactly that- on or off. Non of this standby nonsense!

This is a good point: leaving transformers plugged in means the AC line power will still be running through them. Technically not drawing any current if the device on the secondary winding is turned off. But I have noticed them to get hot just being plugged in!

If the power supply is the same as the NOS Voyagers, it is a switching type which is turned off by the power switch. Hope that helps :)

Well-where I live, the power is somewhat iffy. Anything I value I pass through a good quality surge strip, or a APC power conditioner. Not all fuses/circuit breakers will 'catch' a power spike.
Just saying... :D

Yes thats a very good point.
The juice here in the U.K is pretty good, but I still run my stuff through a surge protector block just to be safe.
I just have to remember when I just unplug the OS that I don't touch the plug pins straight away...
Last time I did that I had a minor surge back from the plug through my hand!
Not dangerous but not pleasant either!
