OK, I see Moog seling two flavors of editor for the Phattys...both $69 but I understand one is from SoundTower (I own/use their DSI Evolver editor) and one from Rekon?
I want to get the
right one
I'm on a MacBook Pro, OS 10.6.8, Ableton Live. I can live with a standalone since my other HW editors are standalone. My primary usage would be the librarian features, I don't expect to program at all on the computer.
So what's the pros and cons of each?

Never used the Rekon, but I can tell you to STAY AWAY FROM SOUNDTOWER! Seriously. Those idiots couldn't program a logarithm to find their way out of a wet paper bag. I used the demo version of the Soundtower editor, and sometimes it worked at 50% efficiency doing 30% of what it should be able to do...on a GOOD day.

Minitaur, CP-251, EHX #1 Echo, EHX Space Drums/Crash Pads, QSC GX-3, Pyramid stereo power amp, Miracle Pianos, Walking Stick ribbon controller, Synthutron.com, 1983 Hammond organ, dot com modular.

I have the SoundTower demo but can't find a Rekon demo, is there one?
I'm quite familiar with SoundTower, their Evolver editor caused me to lose a whole bank of patches

Now I doublecheck the saved file size
and do a raw sysex dump as a backup
Anyone using the Rekon as standalone?

Well, I went ahead and bought the Rekon editor. I'm not crazy about it's librarian features (which is what I will use the most) but it will do the job.
Is v2.10 the latest, if not where do I dl a newer version?

I've been using the new Rekon VST-AU Editor with Logic for the last couple of weeks. I have to admit, I'm absolutely loving how tight it's integration and stability is within Logic, it acts more like a soft synth (apart from having gorgeous sound and hands on control!!!) I agree with your comments on the librarian features, they're far from perfect, but I'm hoping that will change in a future update. Having also experienced SoundTower's failings, losing patches in my LP, I'd much rather go without features and know what I have just works.
By the way, as far as I know v2.10 is the latest version...

Can you have different instances of the VST Editor on different tracks?
If so, how does the communication with the phatty work when editing the different tracks Editor settings?

I'm not sure how you could use multiple instances, Phatty is a monophonic synth. You need to commit your current track to audio before using it on another track, right?
Other synths with VST editors (Virus, Motif XS/XF, Korg M3/Kronos) are multitimbral so a single instance can drive multiple audio tracks.

I've just checked this out, I'm so used to bouncing down, it never occurred to me!!! Yes you can open multiple instances. If you are you talking about having multiple Midi tracks, each with its own VST-AU Editor/Patch, and being able to switch between them to edit them before bouncing down to audio? Then yes, it may be possible, to an extent. The VST-AU Editor setup tab contains a Midi filter which gives you access to a global Midi On/Off button for each destination (to/from synth, to/from host). As this setup is per instance of the Editor, if you disable the Midi output on each instance, apart from the track you're working on, only one channel of Midi is sent to the LP at any time (including automation)... Does this make sense? I did encounter a few issues regarding automation working this way though. Probably not the most efficient way of working!
If you know an easier solution I'd love to know!

What I mean is this.
In a creative process you will probably want to go back and change or add something to an already recorded audio track.
Then it is good if you have different midi tracks (with editor instances) for each audio track so you can go back, do the midi changes (if not played manually) set the same sound/patch and record again.
That's why I am wondering about the interaction between the editor and the phatty. Does the editor instance keep a phatty setting or does it just send patch number to the phatty? How are they communicating?

Right, I did understand you correctly, I just didn't explain myself very well!
Yes you can do what you're asking, however, it is a very cumbersome process and I'm not sure I'd be inclined to use it like this on a daily basis. You're correct in that the phatty preset appears to be saved within the editor instance, however, switching between tracks (editors) doesn't always update the phatty. I'll get in touch with Rekon to see what they have to say about using multiple instances and get back to you...

I've been in touch with Rekon Audio and their response was:
"It is possible to open multiple instances of the plug-in. However, only one will be of any use because the plug-in uses a file called 'VST-AU_Little_Phatty_Editor_Pref.ini' to hold the MIDI Setup settings (MIDI Port, Channel, etc.), so all instances will be using the same MIDI Port and Channel."
So the answer to our question is basically no...

A year later I'm now an iMac running 10.7.5.
Have there been any updates from Soundtower in the past year? I really need a librarian which the Rekon editor lacks.
