Tribute Noisy LFO
I've always had this background noise that is high pitched and changes according to the LFO, it is noticeable enough for me to cut much of the highs during recordings.
Does anyone else have this noise with their tribute, I sent my LP in for the upgrade less than a year ago, and it came back with the same noise, even after the upgrade. Do these synths have this problem? It's making me almost want to sell this thing...

Re: Tribute Noisy LFO
I haven't noticed any unwanted noise on my LP Stage II or SP's.. I'm unsure about the LP Tribute or LP Stage I though.garagebandking41 wrote:I've always had this background noise that is high pitched and changes according to the LFO, it is noticeable enough for me to cut much of the highs during recordings.

If I was you I'd contact Moog Support through their website (aswell as having this thread) to see what they say or if they can help.
I hope it works out for you!

Hmm. Its especially noticeable with bass lines, and the high pitched noise will sometimes change at random, or if I push a random selection. The only thing that changes it consistently is the LFO knob. It's a real shame too, cuz the sounds are killer, but the noise floor on my tribute is way too high for true enjoyment or full recording and keeping the highs...headphone dont help either, its in every signal path.
Thanks for the reply, kinda glad to know its probably just my unit. What help should I get, email or calling is better?

It's either just your unit or possibly some Tributes, but what did you upgrade it to?garagebandking41 wrote:Hmm. There is a form that you can use to email them on the Moog website, then they'll email your email address back (go to support, contact). I always do this but mainly because I'm in New Zealand - if you're in USA you could call easily enough.. the phone number is on the side of the form page.
I hope this helps!

Re: Tribute Noisy LFO
They don't list it on their website now, but was offered not too long ago, It was the Tribute 2.0 upgrade, at the time the OS was updated to 2.2.
Thanks, I sent them an email and will probably call them tomorrow.

Is it the Tribute hiss-noise problem that was widely discussed here some years ago?
If you turn off the EGR Matrix (under System Utilities in 3.1), does it go away then?
If so, you have to live with it. It is a design problem that Moog won't correct.

Re: Tribute Noisy LFO
Hah, I was JUST about to report back and that's what it is. Yeah, YEARS ago! I've had this thing for years, but never took the noise serious as it only occurs with certain presets. But I've been trying to get this burpy bass noise, and it was quite noticeable.
I read a bit, and i guess it is the EGR matrix bull...Have it switched to auto so i can still change settings, but now i have to do a funky push and pull technique on the little phatty now. And that sounds odd don't it!
But i can live with out that horrible hiss, Sounds great now! Does anyone know why this porblem exists? The circuitry behind it? I'd be interested to know as a hobby DIY circuit builder. Was it remedied with the II and slim phatty? I assume it was...wonder how.
Thanks guys. I guess I should have used that search function a bit earlier...oh well.

I don't know. You could ask Amos, I am sure he would (not!) love to see that old discussion coming up again.garagebandking41 wrote:Does anyone know why this porblem exists? The circuitry behind it? Or you could search the forum ...

Re: Tribute Noisy LFO
Guess it's a sour discussion eh? Doesn't look too good for Moog I would guess. But I went from a steady hiss, to no noise at all with the 2.2 upgrade. So I'd say its a good sign for Moog that they found a way to fix a very glaring problem.
I've talked to Amos before when I upgraded the original OS to something like 1.03c. He was very helpful and knowledgeable. I guess he had a lot to do with the little phatty as well in production. Maybe he lost a bet? Let the intern design the scanning circuits? Who knows. Either way, The EGR "fix" allowed me to get back on the LP since I put it away for so long because of this issue. That problem PLUS a nice old tube amp in a room full of incandescent bulbs makes for too much noise to have a good time. Now I feel like I have a new instrument!
Hopefully Moog gets back to me, and lets me know what's up. Thanks again.

Re: Tribute Noisy LFO
IIRC, the noise is due to the EGR matrix in the Tribute being 100% analog, whereas starting with the Stage Edition the EGR matrix has some digital components. Don't recall the details exactly, but that's what it boiled down to.
EDIT- robles » Thu Oct 04, 2007 9:44 am
There is no firmware fix for the problem. The RAC scanning of the knob positions in Amp EG section was causing the noise. They avoided this in the Stage Edition by simply not using RAC for the Amp EG. The Stage Edition Amp EG is strictly midi, then gets converted to CV. No direct analog control for the Amp EG. Unlike the tribute.
I'll stand the hiss, especially if I can turn it off, as long as I can get real analog when I need it. I know I'm an analog snob, but when I buy analog, I want analog.
