yamaha cs-15

anyone have experience with the cs-15? i've got a cs-5 that is fine for recording, but just doesn't have the power when playing live.

i've been using the voyager live, but sometimes i feel like it's the wrong club in the wrong neighborhood to bring a $3000 piece.

the 15 seems really inexpensive for what they say it can do, and i know that yamahas are really reliable.

can it compete with say, a prodigy?

That's a pretty fair assessment. But you already know what it sounds like - it's sounds like a CS5, except more so. It has two oscs rather than one (as does the CS10), but the big feature is the two seperate osc-filter-env signal paths, so you can have two entirely different sounds emerging from it at once. It's quite effective to have a mix of filter types in a patch, or to have a nice fizzy BPF underpinned with a deep sine bass tone.

This doesn't change the fact that the filters have the Yamaha character you already know, so it's not going to sound much like a Prodigy, or any other moog for that matter. Saying that it's quite powerful in a polite kind of way, if that makes sense.

The CS15 is a great little sizer and as the CS5 it got a unique sound. (I regret I sold mine) It is something about that 2-pole multimode filter and the VCO’s. The CS15 has two VCO’s, 2 VCF’s (serial or parallel) so it has more sonic power. Since it has two VCO’s it as a fatter sound but can’t be compared to a moog due to its 2-pole filters.
One little remark… The CS15 does not have as snappy envelopes as the CS5 and CS10.

If you don’t want to bring your voyager then you might what to check out the Sequential Pro~One. A very capable mono sizer that not only has a moogish sound but also adds sync, arpeggiator, simple sequencer and a powerful modulation matrix (for a mono sizer).
