animoog tech in hardware synth???

Post by andrewh » Thu Jan 05, 2012 10:49 am

I'm sure I'm not the only one whose interest was piqued upon learning that moog had been developing the anisotropic engine for years, even before the iPad etc came out. I wonder if they plan to introduce a hardware version of the animoog? perhaps an 8 voice version with more modulation, maybe with actual vcfs? I envision a tilted case, at about the angle of the memorymoog, with a long touchscreen where the knobs would be, and another touchscreen where the keys would be. the touch keyboard is one of the best features on the animoog, wouldn't it be great to be able to stretch it out full size?? and it would be cool to be able to select crazy amounts of virtual mod wheels, up to 5 or so... tell me how feasible or ridiculous this would be.

Unless they have an all-analogue VCO polysynth out first, I could just imagine the reaction of Moog making a DSP/analogue hybrid poly: "We waited all this time for this?!", "It's digital, it is crap (even though I haven't heard it yet)!", "The world owes me!" etc.

Personally I think something this innovative could be amazing - and frankly I have enough VCO>VCF>VCA synths. If they used Sharc DSP like the Solaris with real analogue VCF it could actually be an affordable and very different poly.

I agree that plenty of people would be pissed, but DAMN does the animoog sound good! I like its odds in an audiophile pepsi challenge. I read somewhere that the dsp in the bowen solaris synth allows perfect audio rate modulation; if moog could present that and juicy bass, what would people have to complain about? I suppose that cv/ digital interfacing might be tough to pull off... maybe they'll come out with a new memorymoog AND this unicorn synth we're talking about... I say some version of both within 5 yrs.

Personally I'd rather see an analog poly, but a hardware Animoog would be awesome as well.

I was one of Animoog's many haters, complaining about Moog going digital and what not, up until the point of me actually playing with Animoog. Every misconception I had about the app changed. I love animoog. I love its wild sounds, and the best thing about it is that it does not sound analog, and it is not trying to.

My biggest beef with digital synthesis is when it tries to emulate something it is not, i.e. analog synths, strings, pianos, guitars, etc.... Animoog has a soundscape that is completely its own, and I'd even go so far as to say that Animoog has the potential to change music in a big way.

I don't see them doing this but it would be cool!

My guess is that it would have a real keyboard but I would hope for a ribbon as well.

Moog if they wanted could make a killer digital synth that not only sounded good but looked awesome as well. But they won't, and in my opinion won't make a poly analog either if they haven't already done so. The reason being is that they have a certain historic ideal to maintain, which they risk alienating those who are accustomed to that ideal of the Moog brand. Analog, monophonic synthesis being that ideal. The animoog and probably future apps are just toys to entice the uninitiated to try their real gear. Yes they are high quality toys, and maybe their real gear can be considered toys as well, but the digital stuff is just not close to being on par with the analog hardware. The question is where do they go from here? They have explored almost every option possible. The Voyager is their flagship and to try and out do it would be to risk undermining their best product. But eventually the Voyager will level off, then what? The Minitaur may signal that they are running out of ideas, which is understandable. A modular system is not realistic or practical, there are too many clones that would be just as good and less expensive. I think the only good option is to bring back the Moog Vocoder, which along with the Sennheiser was probably the best sounding vocoder ever made. The overuse of Autotune I think shows that speech synthesis is still very popular, and has made a comeback, but a high quality Moog analog speech synth would make it actually sound good again, very, very good if its anything like the Bode.

Have some people never heard of a MemoryMoog? And after being totally surprised and blown away by the introduction of Animoog I think Moog could make a killer polyphonic synthesizer even if it had digital elements.

my guess is if animoog was brought into a hardware format it would end up being something like this----> http://www.buchla.com/series200e.html
My modular so far: Q104, Q106 x2, Q107, Q108, Q109 x2 , Q116, Q118, Q127 w/Q140, Q130, STG Wave Folder, Mixer and Mankato playing with Moog Voyager, VX-351, CP-251, MF-104M x2 ( STEREO!) Volca Beats and Bass, Arturia Beat step
