How to get rid of "clicks"?

Post by point.source » Sat Aug 27, 2011 3:12 pm

Hi there

I've searched the forum and i've found an old thread about this, but it seems it never got answered.

I know there must be some people out there who notice those "clicks" right at the beggining of a note, when the filter is closed or at least almost 50% percent opened. Usually the clicks happens in the bass presets, and it's really annoying.

When the other elements are playing together, sometimes u can't notice, but if there's only the kick and the bass, or when the breakdown comes and i wanna leave the bass playing i can't, because of those damned clicks.

When you start giving a slow attack, it seems to go away, but i don't wanna do it, it changes the timbre. I wanna a fast attack without the click!!

Is there anyway to get rid of this?? It's really frustrating cause i can't record my moog properly with this damned click on my tunes.

Thx alot

I have recorded a clip to ilustrate this better.

It's a simple 3 notes bassline, you can notice that in the first note there's a click, but in the next two there isn't!!! This is driving me crazy here, i don't know why this happens. You can also notice when i open the attack, it starts to go away, and when i close it, it comes back :(

When i turn filter decay down it becomes even more proeminent.

I hope someone knows how to fix this.

odd. i never noticed any of these - not even when played by keyboard or sequenced by daw.
does it even do it when you're set to CALIBRATION and played manually?

maybe it can be an issue with the daw you're using. not sure, i hope the others can help...

hi.
did you try to change the release value of envelope and filter?

Hi there matey!

Thx for the reply!

Yeah, i tried that already, it works on some presets, in others doesn't.

I believe these clicks are a normal thing from analog synths, maybe the only way to get rid of this is tweking the envelopes until it go away. The only problem is that it changes the overall timbre, it won't be exactly what you wanted.

Hey there! That happens to me occasionally. I just set the amp attack at about 9 o clock and that solves it for me.

Hi there!

Yeah mate, that does the trick, but unfortunately takes a little bit of the punch away.

IT seems that the amp attack and release times have to do with it, also the filter's decay time.

Are you routing the audio directly into a computer's audio card? You may be experiencing a form of latency.

I was experiencing "clicks" (as well as other signal artifacts) with my SP. I had not previously experienced this type of issue with my digital synths. I think it has something to do with the wider range of frequencies inherent in true analog synthesis, and the way a computer handles it.

So, I did some research and bought an audio interface (Roland UA-1G), told the computer to set it as my input source AND (!) clock source (for audio, not MIDI). Completely quelled my audio woes.

*Note that I am routing my audio through optical (24 bit 44.1kHz, which the UA-1G accepts) and using Propellerhead Record. The UA-1G also accepts analog RCA input (but not sure if you can set an analog source as a clock input unless routing through optical).

Hi mate!

I have a TC Electronics Impact Twin as main audio interface. It's Firewire. It has 2 premium pre-amps for mics and instruments. I connect my SP into those. I have a Virus C wich i connect in the line inputs of it, and i don't have the clicks.

I never had any problems with latency here, but will try to change some settings in the TC NEAR control panel to see if anything changes, but im pretty sure that the culprit are the ultra fast envelopes of SP wich snaps.

Thx for the reply!

I did a bit of noodling, and it seems that if you just set amp release wherever you like, and crank filter release, that takes the click out. do the same thing with envelope decay.
