Artist/song recommendations!

Thought it'd be cool to put up a topic for peeps to recommend artists/albums/songs/podcasts etc etc involving the use of Moog equipment and other analog or innovative synths..

Today I got both the Terminator soundtracks by Brad Fiedel and they are incredible, particularly love the Tunnel Chase in the first

Keen to hear some more tunes along those lines if anyone has any recommendations...slow spacey/modular sequences/oberheim leads/minimal percussion.. love it.

I caught these guys on tv when I was in the Philippines. I had to figure out who they are and buy their album. I then contacted them through yahoo, and the guy watched some of my videos, though I worked for Moog hahaha. He told me he was in LA and wanted to buy a Phatty for their keyboard player, wanted to become Moog endorsed artists…

Anything off the Dead Weather's album Sea of Cowards is laden with Little Phatty. It's really cool how they get such a dirty tone out of it. They use it like it's an electric guitar.

Continuing on with my soundtrack theme - the Logan's Run sountrack by Jerry Goldsmith has some sound crazy sounds on it..particularly the track - 'Flamout'

Morton Subotnick's Silver apples of the Moon! Mostly Buchla but you can coax some similar sounds out of the Voyager/Foogers/LP.

Anything by the band Motion City Soundtrack has Moog on it. Their keyboardist used to play an MG1 but with their latest album, My Dinosaur Life, switched to a Little Phatty. Definitely a noticeable difference too.

I've recently released a CD with Prague/Czech Republic based band Poetic Filharmony (http://www.poetic.cx) - Minimoog Voyager is the only synth on the record and there is a lot of it:)) The sound of Voyager is very often re-amped through tube amp (Puretone by Hughes and Kettner) and of course bunch of MoogerFoogers has been used too. (Apologies for advertising my band here, but think it's appropriate in this thread)

The finest obscure synth record I've ever heard (indeed one of the finest, obscure or not) is Tim Blake's Crystal Machine.

There's MiniMoog on there (one that previously belonged to Manfred Mann and can be heard on the Earthband albums prior to 1973), but the main synth action is from the custom double EMS Synthi. The fluency and skill in playing this synth on the track Last Ride of the Boogie Child is breathtaking.

This is an album that should be familar to anyone who appreciates synthesis.

Broadcast made liberal use of vintage synths, though I don't think I have ever seen any video of them with specifically Moog gear. They have, however, been filmed with a Korg Delta, Korg MS-20, and Sequential Circuits Pro-One.

Stereolab was, of course, one of the earlier contemporary bands to champion vintage Moog gear (and actually my introduction to Moog). Looks like it's only a Rogue in this video, but they have at various times made use of the Rogue, MG-1, Voyager, Little Phatty, and Opus 3.

Lali Puna are something of a sister/spinoff group of the Notwist, and use a Korg Delta and Moog Opus 3.

Black Moth Super Rainbow use a Yamaha CS-50, Octave CAT, Yamaha CS-15, Rhodes Piano, Novatron, Yamaha CS-10, Moog Little Phatty, Electrix Warp Factory, and various 'foogers.

No offense but Subotnick's "Silver Apples of the Moon" is a fascinating contrast in that it does not sound like a Moog. Buchla built his instrument at roughly the same time so it's fascinating to see a parallel developed quite advanced synth system. It was the first album entirely made with a synth unless you count demos of precursor instruments that aren't "modern" synths. Now it's true that in comparison to say electronic music based around glitched samples, another analog synth like the original Buchla will sound more like a Moog, but still it is sort of a study in contrast as to an approach to a system with a relatively different philosophy.

Lets see, I'll second Stereolab, they sound like they are often going for a Moog type sound compared to say Lali Puna who seem to go for a retro sound but nowhere near as specifically Moog.

There is always W. Carlos who put the Moog on the map with Switched on Bach, a charting album of classical music in 1968, just after "Silver Apples of the Moon". Carlos' all synth "Clockwork Orange" soundtrack (not the regular soundtrack with a mix of Carlos synth tracks and a lot of other recordings used in the films) is the one to get if you don't really take to Bach played on a synth extremely well.

I myself was Moog inspired by Tomita, a Japanese soundtrack composer who had an American recording contract from the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s to record his versions of classical music. Though he "cheats" somewhat by sending his Mellotron (precursor to the sampler using a tape playback of a recording for each keyboard key) through his Moog filters and VCA, his albums are full of amazing sounds few have duplicated even decades later.

also re: TOMITA! yes even more than Keith Emerson... along with THE IN SOUND FROM WAY, WAY OUT, & Switched on Bach it was Tomita's "Snowflakes Are Dancing" in which the MOOG really hit me first growing up. What other Tomita LPs do people recommend?
