MicroMoog >>> CP-251 Control Processor

I'm a neophyte musician and was wondering whether or not a MicroMoog could be routed through a CP-251 Control Processor (or any other Moogerfooger for that matter). The idea is to expand the MicroMoog's sonic potential.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

sure. you can use both the CV and audio processing features of the moogerfooger pedals with the micro. the connection possibilities are endless.

...lots of science involved. I've made an isolated workstation for the two units. For me, the micromoog is still a bit of an enigma. I only recently brought the mircomoog back from the dead and even more recently found an instruction manual. I've had a few sessions just plugging in wires to see what happens. That will only get me so far. Both of these units harken back to the days of modular synth, so a thorough read of both manuals is next. I would love to hear from anyone else working this combo with any suggestions.

I used to have a micro for a very long time until it stopped working, and I foolishly sold it (I since learned how to fix alot of synth problems).

Anyway, the Micro is actually very well equipped for external patching-- maybe moreso than any other Moog (notwithstanding it's big brother the Multi, and of course, the Voyager).

It has 1/4" input/outputs for Keyboard CV (with an attentuator), OSC CV, Filter Cutoff CV, and an audio input/ oscillator direct audio output. The Osc audio out is particularly cool and very unusual for non-modular synths. You can patch it into the Ring Mod or Low Pass Filter (or use it to modulate the LPF), etc., use it for many typical modular patches.

There are also cinch-jones 2-pin S-trig inputs and outputs which, if needed, can easily be converted to Voltage Gate with a simple circuit (maybe 3 or 4 electronic components) described in the Micro's manual.

There's also another unusual jack that you must have a (somewhat hard to find) 3/16" connector for: it's a modulation input and output. It lets you output the Micro's Sample and Hold, LFO, etc.
You can also (at the same time) input a modualtion signal into the Micro's modulation bus. This is another very unusual and useful input/output.

So, that's alot of routing for a small one osc synth.

I would love to hear from anyone else working this combo with any suggestions.

here are some basic patches, to start with:

--send an LFO, attentuator output, Sample and Hold, etc., from your CP251 to the Micro's Osc In, Filter In, or Modulation input.

--If you can find or make a 2-pin S-trig to 1/4" cable, you can send a square wave LFO to the Micro's S-trig input. This should work as an auto-trigger. You may have to process(attentuate or offset) the LFO signal in order to make this work. Or it may work better if you put together the simple voltage to S-trig conversion circuit found in the Micro's manual. Then you'll also be able to use any voltage pulse as a trigger for the Micro.

--The Micro's Keyboard CV, Modulation out, or Osc Audio Output can be used as a voltage source for the CP-251's Sample and Hold (these are also good CV sources for other Moogers. Audio oscillators are very cool for modulating filters).

With the right processing, the Micro's S-trig out can be used as a trigger for the CP's S+H.

One patch that I used to make on an Arp Odyssey was to send the Keyboard Gate signal to the Sample and Hold's clock, then send the Sample and Hold output to the VCF and/or VCO. With this patch, each time you hit a note, the "sample" changes and you get a new "random" voltage for the filter or osc. This will add an element of uncertainty to your playing and, when used sparingly, can give your sound an uniquely organic quality.

Any of the Micro's CV sources can be processed through the CP's Lag or att., and then re-introduced into the Micro via CV input.
