Pro Soloist patches?

Post by Triumvirat73 » Fri Jun 11, 2010 6:44 pm

Forgive me if this is not the forum for what I'm about to ask but I haven't posted here before. I apologize in advance for being a newb.

Ok, I'm very much in a Genesis mood today and feel like laying down some Selling England, or Lamb tracks this weekend. (and to be honest I spent much of today looking online for a Pro Soloist for sale to no avail) Anyways, has anyone attempted to build the Fuzz Guitar 1 or Telstar Pro Soloist patches on their LP? I don't mind tweaking knobs all night but thought I'd ask in case somebody else has had the urge to patch some old school Tony Banks sounds.

Thanks for reading!

I was fiddling with this last night trying to get the Fuzz Guitar sound:
One Osc. with the waveform setting approx. 12:00 with slow PWM. i.e. In the Mod section, Tri/Sine (can't remember which the LP has) modulating "Wave". Adjust Amount to taste. This gets the buzzy moving sound of the Pro Soloist Fuzz Guitar preset. The missing ingredient that Tony Banks used for more animation is very slow, shallow vibrato. As you know, the LP Stage can route mod to a second destination, but of course the Amount needed for the PWM is way too much when also applied to Pitch (vibrato). If you have an outboard LFO feeding the LP's Pitch CV input you can get pretty close to the Fuzz Guitar.

I was impressed with the accuracy of this:

Wow, that awesome, thanks so much! I'll check out your recommendations when I get home from the office tonight.

I did check out that Pro Soloist website before but it seems I couldn't get it to work on my MacBook Pro. Maybe I should explore it a little further if it comes recommended.

Anyways, thanks again for the suggestions and I'll let you know how it works out.

Cheers!

I want to give you my personal version of a Fuzz Guitar sound of the ARP Pro Soloist:
(start from the preset 00: CALIBRATION)

1) VCOs:
one oscillator, turned on the sawtooth waveform;
the other can be used identical to the first, but an octave upper, but remember the Pro Soloist has only one oscillator...

2) FILTER:
you have to turn the Cutoff frequency, a bit higher than the center position, and a quarter of Resonance...
The KB Amount is to be setted on 0, and the EG Amount in the central position (=the envelop doesn't modulate the filter)
...no Overload

3) ENVELOPES: the one of the amplifier is square (Attack=0, Decay=0, Sustain=MAX, Release=0),
and the Filter EG is about this: Attack=3/4of the range or a bit more (it will be the time of the waveform modulation...), Decay=0, Sustain=0, Release=0

4) MODULATION:
First of all, turn the Mod Wheel up :D
The Source is the 5th, Filter EG, and the destination is Wave
The Rate knob has no value,
the Amount is very important, because you have to find with this parameter when, at the end of the Attack, the waveform of the oscillator is on the square waveform...by ear :)

That's my "ARP PS FuzzGTR" sound

I greet you with this video (not mine)!

Good post, guys.

I own a Moog Voyager and an Arp Pro Soloist. The patch in question on the ARP is a tricky beast to emulate. No matter how close you think you are, when you do a side by side comparison it is very elusive, this patch! No matter how close you think are are, doing a side by side comparison just sends you back to the drawing board time and time again!

My best solution to this recently is the following:

Firstly, as noted in this thread, it's a single oscillator patch, as that was the limitation (or strength some would say) of the Pro Soloist. That being said...

1) After reading all over the internet on that patch specifically, the going wisdom is the waveform is pulse, not sawtooth. (80/20 squarewave). Supposedly they used that waveform through 6 bandpass filters, "synced to the VCF" for Fuzz Guitar. On the Voyager I use Oscillator 3 with 1 and 2 turned off (just sounds the best on mine), waveform control all the way to the right.
2) On the Voyager you get bandpass by putting the filter in High Pass / Low Pass mode; in effect, that's a band pass filter. The manual explains what controls to use to adjust the width of the band and how the cuttoff works. You have to tweak with it to get the right tone. Don't know how to do that on a Phatty but I'm sure you can do it.
3) I am using a Way Huge Swollen Pickle fuzz box - but not for a crunchy distortion as it is capable of providing, but rather, for additional bandpass filtering. The Swollen Pickle has 7 controls, 2 of which are inside the box. I have spent hours tweaking with that little thing and finally came up with a good sound.

The thing you will notice if you get this sound is that you can play Tony's leads with a band and it cuts right through without having to crank the volume so loud that it hurts. It's an amazing sound. I would still be using my Pro Soloist but frankly the thing is so buggy it's not worth it, and the Voyager is such a great synth... you can get everything on the Voyager that the Soloist can do (and more obviously), including all of the vibrato, growl, etc., because the Voyager has the Aftertouch just like the Pro Soloist.

Well that's my solution - hopefully it works for other too.
