VOYAGER + ABLETON

Post by DeejayRaph » Wed Oct 13, 2010 7:51 pm

Hi hows it going,
I just recently bought a Moog Voyager Rack Edition and it took me a while to get all the conections done so that I can use it in ableton.
I see the sound wave, and i record in audio.
I had a question though about Automation,
Since you are recording live, it is hard to record the automation as you are playing a melody.
Are there ways create a loop with the sound from the Voyager, and then automate it live and change the sound as the loop is going????
Is it also possible to run the sound perhaps through a "simpler" so that you can use midi???
Pretty much, what is the way to automate your basses & SYnths =)
I hope this is not confusing :)
Please help, thanks so much in advance.

You could just record the midi notes on your first run, then play them back through the voyager and record the automation on pass two. then when you have all your data as midi, play back the midi (notes + automation) and record it all as one.

You would be a lot better off asking these questions on the ableton forum however. (http://forum.ableton.com/)

Ok well, i understand how to do it now, but i dont know how to actulaly make it so that i send midi notes to the moog :D:D
Is this is all done via settings?

Well you need a midi interface for your computer of course, but in the settings you can enable output on the midi out port on the "Midi sync" tab. It has three boxes labelled "Track", "Sync" and "Remote", i usually just enable all three for the midi interface i want to send midi messages.

Then I create a new midi channel set the "Midi to" selector to be the midi interface i am interested in and set the channel, i usually set up a test sequence that loops so i can get the settings right on the other end (at the moog). Once again this stuff is fairly fundamental midi stuff that relates to any synth, have a look here http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb07/a ... h_0207.htm and here http://bssdigitalsound.wordpress.com/20 ... n-ableton/ or here http://www.google.com.au/search?sourcei ... n+midi+out

Yeah ableton even lets you draw automation for any midi CC number. Look up how the voyager handles MIDI in the manual to see which numbers correspond to each parameter. Then in the modulation window of the MIDI clip in ableton you can draw in automation on anything- fine tune it then record it as audio.
