4th VCO for Voyager?
4th VCO for Voyager?
I've been looking into the MOTM-300 Ultra Voltage-Controlled Oscillator as an add-on 4th oscillator for my Voyager. I was wondering if anyone in Moog Land has played a MOTM or if anyone knows how feasible it would be to use the MOTM-300 VCO with the Voyager? MC, maybe you can help?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I haven't played with any MOTM gear, but looking at the specs on the MOTM site, I see that the 300 does have a 1V/octave response, so it should be fine with the Voyager.
Concerning feasibility, here are some things for you to consider:
The 300 is a single module. It will need either a case (you could build one) or the MOTM rack (19' rack mount). Also, the 300 requires +/-15VDC power - the MOTM 900 Power Supply will cover that, but any supply that provides +/-15VDC and at least 200mA will work.
Realize that with the 300 Oscillator, the 900 PS and the MOTM rack, you're on your way to putting together your own modular! Of course, you're going to spend about $700 for this basic 'system'.
Oh, and you'll need the MoogerFooger VX-351 to provide the pitch CV to the MOTM 300.

I have a Voyager and a 3 VCO MOTM system. They work great together. 2 300 and the mini VCO the 310.
One warning you'll want to start a full on modular system!
The MOTM filters are incredible. I have the 440 and 480. Very different from the Moog sound.
Also look at some the the Blacet modules as well. Their Binary Zone is really fun with the Voyager. The MiniWave too.

There are many ways to add an oscillator (or two, or three) to the Vger. The Blacet, Wiard and MOTM modules are all possibilities. You could also consider building a kit from PAIA. You could also procure any ready-made synth that has CV inputs and oscillator outputs (Analogue Solutions' Red Square and Black Coffee modules come to mind), as well as vintage gear (ARP 2600, for example).
And then there's MIDI control - any synth that provides separate oscillator outs can also be pressed into service to add controllable oscillators to the Vger. You may aleardy have something that works and not realize it.
The point is that there are many ways to go, depending on what you want to do and the $ you have to spend.
And for basic CV expansion of the Vger, you might also consider getting a CP-251 Moogerfooger, along with the rack to mount both the VX and CP modules together. This combo will significantly improve your Vger's CV processing options.

GregAE/bunnyman/sir_dss,
Thanks for the helpful info on adding another oscillator. I will take a look at the Wiard Waveform City module and the Blacet modules.
sir_dss,
So are you able to have a polyphonic setup with your MOTM rig or do you still need more modules (VCA's...etc.) to do that? It seems like you could build a basic MOTM (or Wiard or Blacet) mono synth (or more) to add polyphony to the Voyager without spending as much as the Rack Mount Voyager? I know it wouldn't be the exact sound as the Voyager, but that might be a good thing.
I'm sure you could do the same with Doepfer modules too.
GregAE,
I'll have to look at my other synths to see if I can add the oscillators in with the Voyager. I'm attaching my gear list in case one jumps out at you that will work.
I have the CP-251 also so it looks like I'm ready to go for making a modular rig. I know its expensive, but it's so much fun! I bought solely plugins and digital/VA synths before I got the Voyager. Before I got it, I actually believed the marketers that claimed VA's and plugins sounded like "real analog." They are great synths, but they are analog-like and not even close to the Voyager and other real analogs. I recently got a SCI Prophet 600 and a Poly Evolver. I love the sounds a lot more from the analogs.

Looked at your list of equipment. I could be wrong, but I didn't notice anything with CV inputs or Oscillator outs.
Given your gearlist, however, I'm wondering why you're interested in a 4th oscillator. You can always process any of your gear through the Vger, upping the total oscillator count and taking on the 'fatness' of the Moog filter. Anything is fair game here, including your polyphonic synths (Prophet 600, PolyEvolver, Wavestation) which can all be played from the Voyager using a simple MIDI connection. I'd suggest you spend a few happy hours experimenting.
The VX and CP Moogerfooger pair make a great Voyager interface to a modular system. Sounds like you're on your way there...
FWIW, analog synths fell out of favor in the early 1980's when digital synths like the DX7 came on the scene. The sound of analog was viewed as dull compared to the bright and cutting digital sound, and the new sounds that these digital synths (Yamaha DX7, the Korg M1, Roland D-50, etc.) could create were fresh and new, and very unlike the sounds produced by analog gear. Analog synths were relegated to their Anvil cases, or sold for incredibly cheap prices. Fortunately for us analog lovers, those days are gone. The sound of analog is back and hotter than ever! Nothing sounds like real analog - nothing!

GregAE,
Thanks for the help. I haven't experimented too much with running the other synths through the Voyager, but it's definitely in the near future.
I know that I can live without making a modular, but since I started playing the Voyager I have an insatiable hunger to learn about modular set-ups. I guess instead of cars my brain is wired for synths.
