PW Calibration

Post by PHC » Sun Mar 18, 2007 5:48 pm

Just updated to 1.03Tb and I did the Pitch Wheel Calibration according to the manual before doing the Note Calibration (it saiz that you need to do PW Calibration to do a correct Note Cal).

The manual sais that the center value of the Wheel should be 2048 (+/- 20) and mine is 2009-2012). Is there something wrong with my LP? (The other values are down=401 up=3694

I fear that my Note Calibration will not be correct with the center of the whee with a value out of the +/-20 range. I'm running the Note Calibration now and I'll see if it will be correct using a tuner.

PHC, that's probably fine... it is usually within +/- 20 points of 2048, but that is just a guideline... the important thing about calibration is that you are telling the LP what the real center value is on your hardware, so that it can adjust accordingly.

If it sounds good to you now, I'd say don't sweat it. Your instrument was after all calibrated by hand by an experienced Moog techninja.

Should you ever notice any tuning issues, though, you now have an easy way to get it 100% dialed in, without having to send it back to a tech or crack the case yourself. Nice. :)

right on Amos..the surgeons motto "if it aint broke dont fix it" and yeah ...not seeing it said anywhere about "XX FREE factory tunings" is awesome so when im old and grey (next year) and my ears have drifted i can tune it to my tone deaf hearing :) the last time i got this excited was when "self cleaning ovens and frost free freezers" were invented

I did the Note Calibration and it seems ok.
The drift at both ends of the keyboard is now a little smaller then it was.

Sorry to dig up an old post, but it's the only one I can find referencing a similar issue.

I have a brand new LPS2 (v2.2) and noticed a constant shift in notes on patches with an asymmetric pitch wheel range (+2/-12). After a pitch wheel calibration, all was well—but the center value of my wheel is 1600 (low 346, high 3422).

This is a far cry from the manual's suggested center value of 2048 +/- 20.

I have noticed the wheel's range isn't as even bending notes downward (e.g. an upward bend effects a pitch change over the entire range of from center to +max, a downward bend stops effecting the pitch about 20% from -max).

Normal? Perhaps too far out of spec?

Thanks.

This is odd.

After a PW AMOUNT calibration, the wheel is now centered at 1728 but still exhibits the same range behaviour above. :?:

Turns out the pitch wheel potentiometer shaft was loose on the friction-fit plastic pitch wheel. It felt like there was a grease or oil on the shaft (perhaps from the metal pivot?). Anyhow, I removed the LHC, cleaned things up, re-centered the pot, and I now have the "within spec" range of low 367, mid 2080, high 3721. A little miffed that this was a brand new LP2, but it's perfect now, so I'm happy again.
