Auto tuning issue - is this broke?

Post by cliffman » Wed Sep 01, 2010 3:03 am

I have been having an odd issue, wondering if this thing is busted.

If I leave tuning set on 'Auto' - On power-up the LP tuning is just all over the place.
Frequently 1/2 -> 1 step sharp, even after 30 minutes warming up.
The 'auto' display will also show sharp.
If I switch from 'Auto' to 'On' the tuning will be set at
+535 or some other huge number. If I manually tune, and leave tuning set to 'Off' or 'On'
things appear to stay stable.

Is this normal, or broken? Calibration doesn't help.

In other news, any word of a fix for MIDI pitch bend?

MIDI Pitch bend doesn't track in tune.
Drive the LP from another synth (or with a MIDI guitar, like I do)

Try doing some pitch bends. You'll find the LP goes quite out of tune in the middle of the bend, regardless
of the interval you set it to.
I filed a bug on this over a year ago. Amos Gaynes told me it was due to the use of Bob's analog
pitch bend circuit, which is non-linear in the middle. Not much interest in fixing apparently.
He said it would be fixed, maybe, sometime. Apparently in an alternative universe.

Once the pitchbend is applied and then returns to zero, does the LP stay out of tune. Or is it that the pitchbend is not linear. Still not quite sure what you mean by "doesn't track in tune"? I'll have to check that out on my LP.

Not sure about your autotune issue.

The pitchbend is non-linear. At zero, or at full bend, it's in tune.
If you stop in the middle, it's out of tune.

(modulo the auto tuning issue. )

Uh, I'm not talking about using the damm wheel! I am (he repeats)
talking about MIDI control of the Phatty.

MIDI control. use MIDI. The problem is MIDI control of the Little Phatty's pitch bend.
It has nothing to do with the calibration of the wheel , or anything else about the wheel.

I don't even use the wheel, I use a guitar/MIDI controller. (Moog E1, but that's another story)

And look, I understand perfectly well that if you only use the LP as a live performance tool
having a non-linear pitch bend is fine. People can use their ears.

But, you put a MIDI in on the unit. So my assumption (which might be stupid) is that I can
actually use the device as a MIDI slave of some sort. That frankly, just doesn't look possible atm.
Mainly because Moog shows zero interest in fixing issues which only affect MIDI users of LP.

Oh well.

It shouldn't be that tough to scale the midi to make it linear. Does this have an effect on Midi out as well? I would think it should. It has not been a problem for me with the way I use my LP though
