New Voyager rack owner here, ? about running pedals/effects
How can I run an effect pedal thru the voyager or a rack mount effect unit? the back of the unit only has the audio outputs and the mixer out and external In. I tried to run a pedal thru there like an effects loop, didnt work. I read the manual and the scenario is consfusing me. One side of the cable needs to be tip ring the other needs to be tip ring sleeve? Is that balanced and unbalanced sides on the same cable? help a noob out please....

It's just a common insert cable. The trs side is just send and return, not balanced.
So this thing only plays one note?

so the one side that is tip ring sleeve gets plugged into the voyager and the two connected 1/4 jacks get connected to the in and out of the pedal?

In principle, yes. Make sure you get the send and return the right way round.

errr so i went out and bought an insert cable. Plugged the one end into the mixer out and then i plugged the other two ends into my stompbox( i tried every variation of inputs and outputs) and it will not work. When i plug the tip into the In and the ring into the OUT of the stompbox i cant hear any audio, i think this is the right signal path as specified by the manual. what am i doing wrong? Do i need to control the audio output with a specific knob on the unit?

Do you have gate signals coming in? Also check to see if the send cable is giving you a signal.

You can trigger the gate with a midi note on message, a key press, an external gate cv, or just by flipping the ext gate switch on with no gate coming in.

hmm im kinda lost already lol. Can you take me thru this slowly? I plug the insert cable to the back of the RME and i want to use a stompbox...then what do i do?
Re: New Voyager rack owner here, ? about running pedals/effe
Plug the TRS to the Mixer Out/Filter In of the RME
Plug the TS to IN of your stomp box
Plug the RS to the OUT of your stomp box
There is nothing more to it. If it isn't working, there is a problem with the cable or stompbox (Most likely) or the RME (least likely)

Re: New Voyager rack owner here, ? about running pedals/effe
well i did that and i even purchased 2 insert cables, so it isnt the cables, its the RME. I tried several different stompboxes, none of them worked.
Re: New Voyager rack owner here, ? about running pedals/effe
well i just tried a third hosa insert cable thinking maybe the first two were from a bad batch or whatever..still no luck. i am seeing a midi trigger as the red led is flashing everytime i hit a key but no sound is coming out. This is really frustrating. everything else works on this thing except for this. Has anybody else had this problem? Unless there is a parameter i have to go in and edit in the master screen, i think this unit is defective. I called Moog, they havent called back yet, are they usually good with customer service?

Can you get sound without the insert cable plugged in? Make sure at least one oscillator is turned on in the mixer, open the filter in dual lowpass mode all the way open, and do not apply any envelope modulation or modulation from the busses.
Try initializing the patch (by going into the edit menu) and see if that gives you sound when the gate is triggered. If there is sound, plug the insert cable in and see what happens.
Also try to test if you are getting audio on the send of the cable.

Re: New Voyager rack owner here, ? about running pedals/effe
just an update, i dont get any sound when an insert is plugged into the mixer out jack. The midi is sending because the light is flashing, everything else works wonderfully. I left a message with Moog yesterday morning and i still have not heard back from them. I plugged the outs into a stereo delay pedal and then ran that into my mixer, it got the job done, but the loop should work and i wont be happy until it does. Its not registering the return on the insert cable. When i unplug the cable half way everything is fine so that leads me to believe that whatever is being send thru the insert cable is not being returned. It isnt the cables, i bought 3 of em, it isnt any of the 7 pedals i put in there. It has to be an RME issue. I wonder how long its going to take once it is sent out to be fixed.
