ableton sequencing OldSchool

Post by barnabus1999 » Fri May 21, 2010 4:44 pm

Is there a way I can use ableton to sequence my OS w/o a midi>cv converter?

Can I program a sequence say with an 808 kick, run the out from my mac into the volume in on OS?

No. The only way to sequence your OS is with a MIDI/CV converter (software based like Volta or Silent Way or hardware like a Kenton) or a a hardware CV sequencer.

Is there a consensus on hardware based sequencers? I did a bit of research and it appeared dot com? and doepher ones were popular. Not really sure what I would be looking for beyond say 16 steps and maybe a random button? Any thoughts?

Sounds like a Future Retro Orb (or Revolution) would be up your ally...

The dotcom sequencers look very nice, work well wirh Moog gear.

Doepfer is getting ready to release a Dark Time sequencer here soon to go with their Dark Energy synth. THe VOltages are likely to be closer to what the Moog uses since the Dark Energy is 1V/Octave (if I remember correctly).

Probably the cheapest you can find is the Voice of Saturn 10 step sequencer for just the price of a MoogerFooger or cheaper if you can DIY. They are able to link to each other so if you got multiple units you can poly chain them. 4 would probably be a good number so you can simulate five 8 step sequencers.

The Future Retro Orb, I think Moog even has one that they use from time to time.

A Midi to CV converter will greatly expand your options and allow for software sequencers.

The MFB Step64 is only $325 and with Midi integrated, that's tough to beat. A number of decent demos on YouTube so have a look. I haven't played with one personally but they've moved alot of these.

DarkTime will like be upwards of $600 or so. Any higher and Doepfer is going to run into (price wise) the Maq16/3 which seems incredibly full featured.

I bought the VOS (Voice of Saturn) kit and about $20 of additional parts from digikey and am working on building into a 2RU blank panel. It's going to be low budget but hey... much of this is more about experimentation and learning than gear lust (the other issue is I don't have a spare $600+ for 'just' a sequencer.

I'm a Logic user and have a MP-201 so can certainly do outbound Midi-CV. I've also kicked my Old School with Arp's triggered from a Little Phatty so there's plenty of options between using a computer with software and a Midi-CV connector and doing nothing.
